So anyways, the Yuengling talk had me wondering about the availability
in the area stores. I happened to be in Mobile yesterday, and on the way home, I stopped at a Winn-Dixie "Marketplace" grocery to pick a few things, so looked for it in what appeared to be a fairly well-stocked beer and wine department. And even given the location on the outskirts of Mobile, it was about as well-stocked as many grocery-type stores anywhere. Didn't see it, so I asked a clerk. At first, he said he'd never heard of it, so I spelled it. "O-O-O-H...you mean 'ya-a-n-a-la-a-hn'...shore, we got it...it's over in the 'Premium Imports' section..." Not sure if the above gives a accurate understanding of his pronunciation, but suffice to say, if he'd have ordered it as such in Philly, he would have had to spell it, too... This can't possibly lead to anything remotely good, I thought. "Er, 'premium imports?" says I. "A'course...wheyer else y'all'd thank we'd put it?" says he. "Well, it's from Pennsyl..." and before I could get to "vania," it hit me as to why, in about as south Alabama as you can get without a boat or at least 4-wheel drive, it might be considered an "import." "Nevermind...," says I, realizing that Winn-Dixie wouldn't have a "Carpetbagger" or "Scurrilous Yahnkeh" section... So over to "Premium Imports" I wander...and, er, shore 'nuff, right 'twixt the Sam Adams and Shiner is the Lager, the Light Lager, and the Black and Tan...at a mere $6.99 a six-pack... And FWIW, the bottle label and carrier indicates a Pottsville bottling, so ??? And also FWIW, I'm no beer snob, but it tasted fresh, and given the shelving situation - down to two six-packs of Lager with room for about 20, and similar for the BnT and Light - I'd guess that it sold at least reasonably quickly at that location. Based on that scant evidence, I'd say it would be selling at a greater rate in Mobile proper, but again, ??? TC, R |

Well, I figure that if the good folks from up in Pottsville(about 32 miles away, or thereabouts, from where I am typing) can gouge the deep-south "domestic import" crowd for, lessee, $28 a case, they should have the wherewithall to underwrite the $1.00 pints on tap at the Sportsman's Club. I am glad to see you had access to it, and if you haven't tried it, check out the Black and Tan. Great story, thanks, and the by-line caught my attention! Scurrilous as they come, Tom |

Scurrilous as they come, Tom Haven't tried the BnT yet, but I'll be in Mobile in the next few days, so I'll have a go at it. I looked at a WD Marketplace in MS (less than 30 miles from the one in Mobile, which has a Yuengling distributor according to the website), and while they did have a "Carpetbagger" section and all, no evidence of Yuengling in it or any other area. I know liquor in MS is purchased through the State, but don't know about beer or how that might affect availability. BTW, as to the BnT - am I supposed to be impressed or repulsed? I mean, "check it out" as in, "Holy ****! Check out the tata's on this month's centerfold" or "Holy ****! Check out the...um, er, well, I think those were tatas at some point...on Bea Arthur...HELP! I'M BLIND!!" TC, R |

Check out the...um, er, well, I think those were tatas at some point...on Bea Arthur...HELP! I'M BLIND!!" It is an interesting blend of the porter and the lager. Not bad if you want something substantial. I'm not sure of centerfold status, but no one deserves to spend money on a Bea Arthur-type beer. I like the Black and Tan as a change of pace, especially on tap. As they say, YMMV...... Tom Help! I'm Blind! |

You should be repulsed, but that's not Yuengling's best product. If you like dark beer, try their Porter, instead of the half-Porter. The Gourmet Guide to Beer, by Howard Hillman, gives Yuengling Porter four "Mugs" out of a possible five. Only about eight U.S. beers score that high, and only two or three score five out of five. vince |
