Funny you should mention that. I only came across that recently, and I
found that despite how much I despise that song, the interplay of the
generations & styles between Bing & Bowie managed to make it at least
listenable.

Totally agree. With Bowie himself pushing 60 now, he's mere decade
younger than Bing was at the time of recording. Don't know about you,
but I'd give a wide berth to any, oh, Timberlake/Bowie collaboration
today. I wonder if that's how folks felt about this back in '74?

Best,

Gary

Ah, yes. Kitt's rendition is undoubtedly the definitive version
against which all others are judged (and found wanting). There are a
few others in that category, songs I'd just as soon never hear
anybody else attempt. White Christmas by Bing Crosby, Rudolph the Red
Nosed Reindeer by Gene Autry, and The Christmas Song by Johnny Mathis
come to mind immediately. I'm sure there are others.

Joe F.

Nat King Cole: Chestnuts roasting on an open fire.

And FWIW, that's "The Christmas Song." Chestnuts roasting, etc. is just
the first line, not the title.

R

Bob Rivers is online:

And Ken might want to check out their version of the "The Christmas
Song," "Chipmunks Roasting On An Open Fire."

Without a doubt, hands down, the best Christmas Song
in the entire world-wide history of Christmas Songs:

Catch SNL last week? Pretty entertaining version of the above to start the
show.

I haven't watched Saturday Night Live in years. It used to be
"must-see TV" back in the Belushi, Ackroyd, Chase, Curtin era
but there was a period of prolonged lameness and I got out of
the habit.

OK, Mr. Gere, if you're into rodents...or um, they're into you:

That's cute, but your real-life, actual best ever Christmas Song
has to be kid friendly not X-rated. I mean us old farts can roast
our chestnuts on the fire but when you get right down to it
Christmas is for kids.

Can't say that I blame you, as the past few seasons (OK, 15) have pretty
much sucked, but this season has been pretty funny so far. It appears (to
me, anyway) that Lorne Michaels has returned to making a sketch comedy show
rather than a movie-development vehicle.

You can find many of the best skits on youtube these days. Just saw King
Tut, and Bulushi's imitation of Cocker.

Why limit it to _Christmas_ songs?

Chanukah Funk, by Beck

Er, no, _mine_ doesn't, but IAC, I like "normal" Christmas songs, but if
it's just adults, some of the, um, variations are pretty clever and
funny. And there are some funny, family-friendly songs, ala "Blue
Christmas," by "Porky Pig"

I mean us old farts can roast

I disagree. It's for anyone who wishes to get into the spirit,
Christian or otherwise.

I'd forgotten about that one. That's a hoot.
