Then get thy self to the library and check out some books written by the old masters. The gear sections will be entirely useless--with respect to what is being used today, but interesting to see what was used in the past (disclaimer: yes some folk still use that antiquated crap, but they are prudes and should never be queried about fishing or sex!).

A small list of writers might include:
A.K. Best
Gary Borger
Dave Whitlock
Joe Brooks
Jim Quick
Ray Bergman
A.J. Mc Clane
Dave Hughes
Ernest Schwiebert

Or simply proceed to this site and pick from among thousands of books with a lifetime of reading and choose books with titles that interest you and your fishing interests.

Seriously, don't put too much stock in one author or video producer. Read what's been out there for decades. The men that wrote these books actually fished, studied entymology, tied flyz, studied streams, and knew how to teach others too!

Get suggestions from other ROFFians too, as to the better writers, as my knowledge is very limited. If you are in the West, you might want to focus on books that speak to the various types of waters out your way. No matter the ebook, there is always something in it that is transferable.

Read, read, and then read some more---BOOKS!

Okay, there is one exception--NEVER EVER read Middleton's "On the Spine of Time"! Garbage, pure and simple!

Oh, and get yourself some fancy lithograph or oil paintings of fly fishing scenes to hang about the house. A velvet print of Elvis decked out in his fly fishing regalia is expensive but fashionable--I have several.

And never speak ill of the Swedish Chef!

Regards,

Op

Okay, Mark, I can't stand it anymore. It is entomology. Entomology.
Entomology is the study of insects, Etymology is the study of word
origins. Entymology has no meaning.

It is a common mistake, even wikipedia has this qualifier under its
article on etymology " Not to be confused with Entomology, the
scientific study of insects".

I hate to nit-pick, but seein' as how this entomology stuff is my chosen
profession and all, I do like to see it spelled correctly.

Tim Lysyk

(and yes, my last name is really spelled with all those 'y's).

Okay. *Now you have made me feel guilty. *You
put a lot of work into that list and I neglected
to tell you about a problem with that smokey/musty
smell from books, especially old books. *That
smell literally being dust/paper mite s---. *(I
sometimes wonder if people who revel in that smell
know ... *I wonder what they think of cow pies.)

Do you know if any of your choices come in electronic
form? *And, which of your recommendations would
be your favorite? *Read below before commenting.

By the way, I am currently watching a video on
the Madison. *I love the scenery and I love the
water. *But so far have not learned a thing,
other than Yellowstone park forbids the use of lead.
I am just watching someone cast a lot on some very
pretty water. *For me to have learned anything new
he would have 1) shown all the bugs in question
2) gone underwater to show me the bugs in their natural
habitat 3) shown me underwater how the fish hunt
these bugs, and 4) explained why his flies, that do not
look anything like the bugs in question, actually work.

He also does a lot of forward casting, which makes me
wonder. *(Ozzie, in his second video, documents in
slow motion video, when a trout raises up to take
such a cast, how the tippet hits the top of the
trouts head and pops the fly over his head. *If anyone
gets offended by what I just said, take it up with Ozzie,
not me.)

Hope you and yours had a merry Christmas! *Thank you
for all the effort you put into the list. * I will
consider it a Christmas present from you to me.

-T

With all the rules you have for learning it is little wonder that you
don't do any of it.

You do realize that this is a compliment coming from
the most closed minded person I know.
