I have a small pond near my house where the large majority of bass are in
the one pound range so I am looking to purchase an ultralight setup to make
this pond more fun. Could someone make a recommendation as far as reel and
rod. For the reel I would prefer to stick with shimano but for the rod I am
open to anything.
Thanks,

Steve Huber built me a 7 foot UL for 2 to 6 pound test that might just be
the best spinning rod of any action that I've ever used. I spec'd it out
for 1/32 to 1/8 oz jigs, but it quickly became my favorite drop shot rod as
well.

Loomis SJR 700, great deep crappie and small bass rod. The ultimate river
smallmouth rod. A mag bass ultralight by design.

If the other recommendations are a bit pricey for your taste, go to Wally
World and pick up a Luhr Jensen UL 6 foot rod and a Spirex 500 reel. I have
this setup and it has served me well for a while so far.

Forgot to mention Shimano owns Loomis and that's where they get their V-Rod
blanks, so I guess a Loomis is legal.

I bought a 9 foot bps Wally Marshall Pro Series crappie rod that I like
very much. I have caught bass in the 9"-15" range. Its not "ultra-light"
but a "light" action rod 2-6 pound line. I use 8# line on it though with
a zebco 33. This rod is also somewhat fast action. If wiggle the rod
the tip will come to a stop rather quickly. This seems to help with
casting a bit farther along with the length of it.

I actually like to have 2 ultra-light rods. One a fast action for working tiny
jigs and a slower action for useing spinners and small plugs. I think a slower
action rod helps absorb the shock of a strike on these lures. A fast action
rod w/a sensitive tip is good for imparting the ammount of action i want to a
jig and helps detect soft bites.
