Big Dale in print...

Imagine my surprise (and delight) when my fishing partner produces the
latest (Summer 04) issue of "Flyfisher" and in the "Flybox" feature is
the Roadkill Roundtable's offerings. Included is ROFF's own, Big Dale,
with his "Los Alamos Ant" and "Psychedelic Hopper." I'll let Big Dale
fill in further details as he sees fit.

Thanks to John and Richard. I was very fortunate to fall into the group of
misfits known as The Roadkill Roundtable a decade ago. I used to think that
there were groups like this all over the country, but I am beginning to realise
how special this group is. It is kind of like ROFF in that there is a core
group who are there every week when they are not out of town and others that
drift in from time to time. We seldom plan anything except tying at conclaves,
and even then several have been known to show up in say Livingston, and not
known others would be there till we see each others cars, trucks, or suv's in
the parking lot of the same motel that we stumbled into. You just have to enjoy
tying flies and learning from each other and also like to have folks watch you
tie flies. I think one of the key dynamics of the group is that we tie on a
regular basis in the front of a fly shop where anyone that comes in can watch
and ask questions. This gives a different feel than say tying in a room at a
local community college on a Thursday night. The last few years spent tying at
the local Bass Pro shop with their high volume of foot traffic has lead to a
lot of passers-by going in and buying a vise, some tools, and materials, or a
fly rod. We have some information available on the Dallas Flyfishers and Fort
Worth Fly Fishers clubs and has lead to several visiting or joining our clubs.
It is truly a situation where everyone wins. We have also been lucky to have
known Verne Lehumberg for several years now and have benefitted from his page
The Flybox in the FFF's Magazine. Several of the members have had photos of
their flies published over the years and he did one other feature covering The
Flies of The Roadkill Roundtable. His page was discontinued last year when the
magazine got a new editor, and this year it was reinstated due to demand and he
came to us needing a bunch of flies in a short time frame to make a deadline.
As you can see we came thru. As you can see from the photos, all of the guys I
tie flies with have greater skill than I do, but I have a lot of fun with it. I
have learned to be somewhat proficent at tying flies after a decade of tying
flies for a few hours every Saturday when I am not out fishing ao doing
anything else. We have a lot of fun at this.
