WX in TONS

It appears on the telly that our friends in TONS and environs are

well, unlike my friend in lenoir, i ain't diggin it. i am, however, making
the best of it. got up yesterday morning and after a couple of cups of hot
coffee, made for my buddy and me, a very nice breakfast of scrambled eggs
and warm gooey orange danish. after a little more lounging around in
flannel pajamas, we ventured out to a local student/boonie hangout
in"downtown" boone called "our daily bread." there, i enjoyed a bowl of
hot, thick apple & cheddar soup, accompanied by a rueben sandwhich. after
that, we walked across the street to the famed mast general store, where we
proceeded to fill a basket with ten bucks worth of candy from the numerous
barrels of sugary delights, for which mast is very well known. while there
we met a fella holding a very happy and healthy looking 5 month old baby
boy. this proud "papaw" told us the story of how the baby's mama died just a
few weeks (cancer) after the baby was born. we talked a bit, the man moved
me to tears with his bittersweet story of both triumph and loss. we wished
him well, and headed back out onto a snow covered king street. by now the
snow had turned to rain, and fearing that if my friend didn't make his way
(home) off the mountain soon, he might not make it at all. having much
school-work ahead of me, i shooed him off the mountain, and settled in for
an evening of reading about ashe county's involvement in the civil war.
today, after a couple more cups of coffee, a little more "week-end edition"
and a left over orange danish, i will sit down to more reading, this time
marx's *capital* and possibly, if i can get out, i will head out to a movie
a little later. right now we have some light flurries comin down. i
haven't opened my door, but it looks pretty cold. i must say, though, that
the snow covered mountains are a thing of beauty, indeed.

i'm tryin. the heating system in my apartment consists of electric heat
which is located in the ceiling- (i am a second, and last, floor apt)-
obviously inefficient. so, i purchased a little electric heater- amazing
results.

How much snow did y'all get? We got about 4 to 5 inches--what a waste of
perfectly good snow!

barely enough snow here in greensboro to cover the ground. but
freezing drizzle has made any kind of travel hazardous--especially
walking.

i just sort of shut my eyes tight during jan. and feb., and dream up an
early april.

A friend once likened it to diving waaaaay down in a pond, and then swimming
up up up for air. About now, you're just making the corner at the bottom.

The best part of winter in Maine didn't happen until you resolved yourself
to it. I always hated the _change_ of seasons....the brutal mud season
between winter and spring, the cold abandonment of limbo season between fall
and winter. But once winter was there, full on, with snowbanks, frozen
streams and ponds, cross-country skis, snowmobiles, bonfires, sanded
sidewalks, boots mittens and wool caps, it was a total blast. I think living
where winter never really gets a toehold; where a few weeks of uncomfortable
denial might get you through it, is like going from the limbo season to the
mud season, without the perks.

Stay warm, April is coming.

I had to read some of it for a "History of Economic Thought" course.

Pretty dull! Compared to that, John Meynard Keynes' General Theory of
Employment, Interest, and Money was downright exciting!

i'm reading it for a course called ; *marx*. the course is a study of the
book, and marx's theory of capitalism (obviously). i guess that was a
little redundant. :-)
the course is offered through the interdisciniplary studies dep't. it's
been really interesting, and i have applied his theories to argue (in a
paper that i wrote for another class), that appalachia was involved in a
capitalistic economic system through it's forced involvement in the european
trade system - generally spanning from the late 1600s to the mid- 1700s.
