What are you complaining about, New Mexico is only one state over.

I didn't mean to lay a guilt trip on you. I don't have surgery scheduled till
Thursday myself. I happen to prefer to fish for bluegill rather than trout
anyway. And I do enjoy driving a few days once in a while.

I like a lot of New Mexico, but west Texas lost it's charm for me a few decades
ago.

I know that, and guilt was too strong a word, but you and Mu reminded me
that I should be more thankful for what I do have, at every level, not just
fishing holes.

Good luck with the Doctors ... one noticed today that they had right knee on
the paperwork and it's the left that they are supposed to work on .... add
his comment, "you're fine, but your EKG looks like part of your heart has
been damaged some time, some how .. " and I'm not brimming with confidence
and eagerness

I have a SASS program for my IPAQ.

I've been retired almost 11 years but I vaguely recall using, long
ago, before an easier way came along, an SPSS-- Statistical Package
for the Social Sciences. Is the SASS any relation?

Standard Analysis Software System. It's been a few years since I used it as
well. Just commenting on logs and such BS. I go fishing to get such things
completely out of my mind. Its working better all the time..

One of the things I've noticed since retiring is that the "get away from"
motivation no longer exists for any hobby. In the case of some hobbies
this has nearly removed my interest in them ... it seems that I did them
only to get away.

But, for me, with fishing it's been the opposite, my interest has increased.
Most of my fishing in the past was short periods stuffed into a tight
schedule, " I can fish until 4:30, then I have to go meet the clients" It
was ok, but, I can remember telling my wife many times, "I could go fishing,
I guess, but it just isn't much fun fishing if I have to watch the clock."

My fishing, now, totally involves going TO something I deeply enjoy, ( not
really catching fish, but that's another post, maybe someday ) and I have
enough time to explore it's meaning to me, at all the many various levels.
I agree, in general, that "counting" in fishing is BS and presented my first
'data output' as humor, with myself as the joke. The 'data-istics' I now
keep are really the result of a boring day and the fact that it gave me an
hour or so of mental challenge writing the code to collect and display them.
If it wasn't done automatically, now that the code is written, I'd never
keep it up .... and I will delete the code, if I sense 'numbers' doing my
fishing the kind of spiritual harm that they and competition sometimes can.

However, I would strongly suggest to anyone really into fly fishing that
they keep a log. Mine has been a great source of pleasure, re-reading it
this off season time of year. And, fwiw, a great many of the serious
FFishers I've met are log keepers, and swear by it. Yes, you can look up
what fly worked last year ( often worthless information ) but the real
benefits of a log revolve on the parts of the experience that aren't
'catching fish.'

One last thing that your words brought to my mind ( I'm not really answering
you, just expressing a stream of thought your words started ). I got
started on really noticing the difference between hobbies one "goes TO" and
hobbies that one does, mainly, "to get away," as I was first semi-retired.
I met several retired people and noticed comments like, "I used to fish a
lot, I could hardly wait to get a weekend when I could get away and go the
river, .... but, I don't go much now." I realized that these were people
that ONLY fished to 'get away' and with nothing to get away from, the
reasons to fish no longer existed.

Excellent idea Larry, I don't keep a log or a journal for fly fishing, but I
think I'm going to start after reading your Re....it makes sense.
