NYC Reservoir System

Does anyone on the group ever fish the Croton Watershed System. The
reservoirs and the adjoining streams hold a lot of fish and I'm
wondering about favorite methods, spots, etc. Just got my new city
water permit (lost the old one) and I'm raring to go. Used to fish a
lot from shore at Kensico Reservoir. Mostly sunnies and bass, but the
occasional lunker brown trout.

Jerry, How do I obtain the permit from the NYC H2O Board? Tried a Google
dearch and couldn't find a link. Do I have to use snail mail? TIA Marty

Go to this link and print out the application form. It requires
sending it in (snailmail), and picking up the permit at a local police
station (near the reservoir of your choice). You'll need Adobe Acrobat
Reader to read and print it, as it's a PDF.

It looks like you need a permit to access the area, but not a special
fishing permit. Is this true?

Hi Scott,

From looking at the card in my wallet, yes, the city is issuing a
"public access permit". It came with a tag to hang from the rear view
mirror for the car. You will also need a normal NYS fishing license.

Dang . . .I got one of these things in 1998 when living in New York State.
Never fished in one of the "protected" areas. But I sure thought the rules
were strange then that I had to go to a "specific" office to pick up my
permit. Don't know what 9/11 did to that, but this was supposed to be a
"life' permit. Still have it.

9/11 changed it into a souvenir of a simpler time. Permits must be
renewed every five years for everyone now.
