Penns Creek TR..Short

Made a quick 24 hour trip up to Penn's this past weekend. Spectacular
weather as it has been in most parts, and lots of bugs for this time of
year. The fish weren't as cooperative, but we did manage to scare a few up.
The water's a tad cold but I think the drastic rise in temps over the past
few week's has concentrated the bug activity. Fished from Cherry Run down
to Weikert and saw a boatload of Red Quills and BWO's mixed in with some
Hendrickson's, various Caddis, and stoneflies. Saw a few Grannom caddis,
but suspect the best is yet to come over the next week. Should be a great
weekend for fishing next weekend too, I'm jealous, but did get my fix in.

Daniel, my 6 year old accompanied me, and Sat night we made a quick Cherry
Run to Blue Rock tour, witnessed many rising trout just at dusk and managed
one with the final casts at Blue Rock before the bats called it. We met up
with Bruce Fisher and nephew Jim-Bob/Steve/Tom/George/Brian/Kevin (or
"whatever your name is") later in the night and took in a flic at the local
cinema (SpongeBob the Movie I think). On Sunday, Dan was more interested
in throwing rocks, and sticks, as predicted, but did have an occasional
interest in making a cast, or helping us reel in every fish we happened
upon. Loved to pick up Mr. Brown Trout, and gave the first one landed the
traditional kiss on the cheek (tears come to the eyes just thinking about
it......).

Another tearjerker soon followed when he attempted to cross a narrow shallow
trickle of a feeder stream along the way and took his first dive into the
water. My wife was smart enough to equip me with plenty of extra clothes
and no true physical damage, just a slight ping on the young Ego which was
quickly calmed with the change of clothes. I Guess he needs some waders,
any suggestions for youngsters?

After a Mountain Burger w/Fries at the Sportsman's Club we made the
obligatory venture back to the stream in vain. Plenty of bugs, but nothing
moving for them in the cold water and high sun. Took off shortly
thereafter. A great first trip for him, and first one this spring for me,

Yeah I was afraid of the prices. $109 for something he will grow out of in
a few months is questionable, but may be worth it to at least get him
hooked....

It's spring, it's supposed to rain. The water temps are up there above
average, and the air temps will still be seasonally average or above, even
with the rain. Unless they call for a deluge, don't be scared off.
Grannoms in the rain can be a wonderful thing.

hooked....

Mike, I've had my kids learn the intricacies of wet wading. On camping
trips I always bring an extra pair of sneakers for them to use as wading
shoes.

I've tried to keep up with them with XC ski boots, and it isn't easy- or
cheap! But those are more readily available second-hand than kid sized
waders would be.

I would agree except the water this time of year is around 50 degrees and
think I would be a bit negligent to let them wade. Not that I'm the model
Dad or anything, but just don't think they would go for it, at least very
long. For warm water fishing that would be easier anyway as I do that
myself.

The water must be cold up their around the great lakes, do the kids go in
the cold water without complaint?

Alright, so maybe a bit cold on Sunday with Snow possible, but only rainy on
Saturday.....you should be used to that by now, eh? Feel a bit strange to
say that now, since it is still 78 degrees right now at almost 9:00PM (it
was upper 80s this afternoon). One front moves through tonight though, and
another Friday into Saturday.

Hence the "intricacies" of wet wading :-) These are usually cold brook
trout streams, so we all learn about rock-hopping, keeping to the bank as
much as possible, and having a big towel handy back in camp! (...and a hip
flask for me, cocoa for them...)

My kids are real troopers about outdoors stuff, and if they want to explore
the stream, I let them know the boundaries of doing so safely. Sort of like
winter activities/play- knowing when it is OK to let your fingers or toes
get cold, and when it's not OK!

Even in summer, these streams stay pretty darned cold. Wouldn't want to do
it when the air temps are cold as well. But on a hot day, after a long
hike, splashing/playing/fishing in that water feels darned good!
