Default Flies for Shad

Does anyone have a good pattern for fishing shad in the northwest? I'll be
fishing the rivers around Portland Or. The two local shops I went to didn't
have anyone that had a any experience doing it.

I tried it last year with a collection of standard shad flies. I got strikes
on most of them. Did you try Kaufmann's?

Tying shad flies is very simple. You just use bright colors, and a lot of
weight. If you do a google search on Shad flies, you will find a lot of
entries. You just have to be careful and discard the patterns that are
meant to imitate tiny shad for bait for other fish. Most online catalogs
will have some.
In general, they will have a tail that is shiny, or flashy, like flashabou,
a colorful body, commonly of chenile, and a weight varying from lead
barbells to bead chain. The colors are probably not important but pinks,
reds, yelllows and white are very commmon
Most of my fishing expeirence is on the Yuba in Central California. The
guides want HEAVy flies. For barbells, they want you to use lead, not brass
.. However, I think that it is wise to have some of every weight for the
situation.
