Has been scared to near death most likely not knowing what the hell
is happening to it.


I don't think a bass's brain is big enought to do all that.

Rich Zaleski's book "Advanced Bass Techniques", has good insights pertaining
to a Bass's intelligence and stress. It expands on Ronnie's comment. I was
just re-reading it yesterday. Makes sense to me.
