As Lord Chesterfield reputedly said to his son (albeit in a somewhat
different context), "The pleasure is momentary, the position ridiculous, and
the expense damnable."

Wolfgang
aside from that, find a local shop or club, rent videos, talk to someone out
on the water.......or hang out here for a while, read, and ask specific
questions.

Polite too. Go to http://www.flyanglersonline.com/ and click on the fly
fishing basics on the left.

Tip #1: Don't get the flu. I've had the freakin' stuff for two days and
I don't recommend it. At all. Calling for Ralph on the big white
telephone wasn't so bad, but not knowing what was being said on roff
near drove me crazy.

please

Thanks for posting that link.
I'm in much the same "newbie" situation, myself.

I learned it all myself from the internet and videos. I understand that
things are quite different in the UK. You have to pay to get to a stream?

there aren't any streams near me
there are rivers but they only really hold coarse fish however i did see a pair of trout there about a month ago.
The license for that is only £8 for me

a man i know is going to take me to that big lake called rutland water which has a lot of trout but i think it's quite expensive to go there for a day.

Okay. One thing you may have to get over is that you can use a fly rod for
both game and coarse fish. I lived next to the Great Ouse in St. Ives,
Cambs for 4 years. Had a blast with rudd and pike. I even out fished the
guys at the carp ponds (hmm, fly rod isn't cricket I was told. Then again,
I didn't chum). Don't lock yourself into game fish and you can have a blast
close to home and its a great learning experience.

Question

Was it hard to catch coarse fish?
What type of flies work well?

Not at all. Small white streamers for rudd can also get small pike.
"Maggot flies" made from glass beads can be used on carp. Algae flies and
anything else you can think of. I had 100 fish days on the Ouse. Do some
searching around, check out the www.flyanglersonline.com site and study your
fish. Find out what the coarse fishermen are using and find a fly that
immitates it. Most of all, have fun.
