Sounds like an Alvey Sidecaster, a popular reel here in Australia. My first
ever fishing rig apart from a pine sapling with cord line was a pine sapling with runners bound on by twine and an alvey sidecaster. Many a redfin (english perch) was taken with the above rig . |

I modified a simple centre-pin reel to do just that - over 50 years ago. I couldn't afford a "threadline " reel and had to make do.
