Alright I don't need to start a war. I take the kiss my ass
comment back. If some damn fool wants to still be
a Winston lover they don't have to kiss my ass.

Default POLL: What Is Your Favorite Fly Rod?

Oh look at Mr. Negative coming in here and trying to be fricken Sherlock
Holmes and figure out why I am posting a poll, and that I have some big evil
scheme behind it! What are you, the damn poll police?

you wrote: In that case....with you being a writer and all, not to mention
one with
a vast 18 months or so of FFing under your belt, is there any chance you
are trying to cobble together a "gimme," not to mention approach vendors
with the story/information, hoping for freebies?

Get a life pal-- and what difference does it make how long I have been fly
fishing?
The reason I am taking this poll has nothing to do with writing genius, and
if you would have just asked me kindly instead of conjuring up some
negative "bull#$%* I would have kindly explained.

You don't have to drag your pathetic depressed negativity onto this bored
just because you need attention.
@$$holes like you are getting old on these newsgroups.
Didn't your mommy teach you, that if you don't have anything nice to say,
than don't say it!

you also wroteMust be a tough thing for a writer...always remember, words
and grammar,
um, is your friends...and BTW, Orvis makes more than 2 rods only,
particularly (and in general) in the T3 series...only...

For one, your words barely even make sense, and two--I am very aware that
Orvis makes more than two rods-- genius!
I own seven them and at least one from every series.
I am also an Orvis endorsed fly fishing guide now, a professional fly tyer
and a custom fly rod builder who has had much success in the sport and
business, which is the reason for this poll in the first place (to see what
trends in rods are doing) not for writing some big evil industry "gimmie".

And since you brought it up, writing and grammar that is; you could use a
few lessons there pal. Something else your mother didn't teach you very
well.

I am done wasting my energy on fools like you!

Good day,

Richard Lee Merritt

As for everyone else who was kind enough to leave positive comments and
participate, Thank you!
I really appreciate your thoughts.

it's just bliss for me.
Most of my gear is from Orvis, it's good stuff!
If I had to choose a second, I think it would be RL Winston Boron IIx.

Well Richard...that is a very hard question to answer because the
paramaters are so wide. If you mean *trout* rod...it's a Sage XP 590-4.

But here near the coast of Maine we do as much (or more) salt Striper
fishing than we do trout...and for that it's an old (1st Generation) Sage
RPLX (no i or Xi2) 990-3.

For Bass and Bonefish a Scott STS 907-3. So the answers to your question
would generate perhaps a bit more concensus if the paramaters get narrowed
a bit.

Ken, you wrote So you see it's not really practical to have but one or
two favorites.

I totally agree, I have several rods for different species and situations.
I guess what I was getting at is if you had to choose 1or 2. I am mostly
interested in the manufacturer part of the answer.
Thanks for your comments Ken!
Have a great day!

If I were to reply, the fly rod I'm using at the moment,
that wouldn't be as smartassed as it sounds. There are
many variables, sitting in a canoe or standing, wide open
casting or heavy cover, calm day or wind blowin' like hell,
fishing size 24 midges or heaving half a ton of deer hair
etc. etc.

So you see it's not really practical to have but one or
two favorites.

In no particular order:

In a canoe fishing for bluegill: Winston IM6 9' 3wt
Standing in a gale fishing for trout: Sage 590-4 RPL
Standing in a wide open stream fishing for trout: Sage 490-4 LL
Crawling on my belly fishing for brookies: Winston IM6 7.5' 3wt

Sage 590 RPL 2 piece. Although I have since bought a fews rods that negat
my use of that first great sage rod, I will never part with it. Will
make for a good rod for the boys to break in on. Great all around rod,
not in the same class as the SP for line control, but got the job done for
10 + years of constant use. Made the great leap in understanding the
difference better equipment can make and then the SP matched that leap,
two fold, years later. Still a proponent that you don't need the best
equipment to be the best fisherman, but it can help reduce the work you
need to exert, having a perfectly matched rod.

What are you fishin' with these days?

When the conditions are right, Thomas and Thomas Paradigm 8 foot 3 weight
two piece. For me, the smoothest tool possible for a cast that's hard on
a rod. Enough backbone to land 19-20 inch fish w/light tippet, but
light, and delicate, enough to cast all but the very micro sized flies.

I have too admit both the SP and Paradigm are a bit overpriced for me
right out of the store. If you've got the cash to throw around, they're
guaranteed to thrill, but was able to pick up both of them a few years ago
for a very modest price by using the greatest idea of the 21st century
thus far, EBay, or I still may be casting nymphs with that old RPL.

The Finn
