I used to love coarse fishing at my local lake. This was about 10 years ago.
I was thinking of getting back into coarse fishing probably just at my local lake. I was thinking of getting a 13ft match rod, fixed spool real, plus some floats, shot, hooks etc. Which rod and real would you recommend for a £150 budget. Also what other items should I be buying? |

You don't need to spend as much as 150 quid to get a perfectly acceptable rod and reel. Take a look at https://www.bosfish.co.uk/PRODUCTS/O...utfitindex.htm to see how cheaply it can be done. If you do want to spend that much, I think I'd spend 100 on the rod and 50 on the reel. I think you're well into diminishing returns spending more than 50 quid on a small fixed spool. To be honest, for that sort of money you won't find any bad kit. You're probably best going into a quiet tackle shop where they will help advise you and let you set the rod up with the reel and see how it feels. Other stuff; you'll need a landing net. Something to sit on. Something to carry your rod with, and something to carry the rest of your kit in (if the thing for sitting on doesn't do that!). Rod rests. Disgorger / forceps. One other thought; if your local lake contains good sized bream or tench, you might get better value out of one of the avon/quiver combination rods; usually supplied with two tips, one of which is used to make up a heavy float rod, the other of which has a built-in or plug-in quivertip for legering. This is a typical one: http://www.tackleshop.co.uk/productd...619/GroupID/9/ CategoryID/184 This is a more delicate variation on the theme, more suited to good sized roach and perch than the bream/tench/chub focused rods: http://www.anglingdirect.co.uk/catal...roducts_id=200 4 Not as good as a standard 13' match rod for general float fishing, though. -- Steve Walker |

Hi Phil
As Steve walker replied, £150 is more than enough to get back in the swing of fishing. In fact one benefit to come from your 10 years away is that the supply of rods etc has become even more competitive and therfore kit is even better value. my own suggestion would be that before spending even a penny, I would go tthe lake you have in mind and have a chat with a few people who look like they might know the water well. You may find the fishing has changed and, your interst in which you would like to catch has changed as well. This will have an effect on the type of rod you would need.... On the other hand, if like me, you get as much enjoyment by sitting there and day dreaming as you do from catching fish, then pop into your local tackle shop and spend no more than £50 total and spend this first season just learning how to relax again by the water! Have fun Nigel |
