So, Jeff, while we're sitting in camp drinking Kona Mt fresh ground, let's
be sure to sing loudly (is wayno coming along?) and wear safety orange, eh?

Oh don;t be so quick, you never know when you might need a fire starter, or
speaking of orange....an antiseptic.

Wayne
I'd rather fish with a KPOS than drink blended scotch.

Might even bring along one of my own. Starting to get the bamboo jones.
Would an old Granger be a good place to get my feet, so to speak, wet?

An old granger would be fine as a start, provided you like the action. Don't
get a bamboo just to get a bamboo.

Which reminds me, can you make a rod? A few years back I bought a bunch of
rod building stuff from a friend who was trying to go into competition
shooting, in the stuff was what was described as a south bend 4wt cane
blank. I've never gotten around to learning the craft and I'll make you (and
you alone) a deal on the blank if you're interested.

Here come da judge! Yep, those should certainly make the trip. Perhaps I
can liberate a few of the vintage gems as well.

If you've not done so, read Laughing Whitefish. It's not about fishing but
an enjoyable read.

Speaking of, it's about that time of year when I read the chapter about
opening day trips. Note to self.

Between now and the last weekend in April (Michigan opener) I will re-read
Anatomy of a Fisherman. no particular reason other than it must be done.

What the hell other reason would there be? Just 'cause it's superior to
plastic? :-)

My line of thinking is get something decent that won't break the bank. I've
casted bamboo for exactly one afternoon (thank you very much, by the way!)
and have no idea what action I'd like, other than I really enjoyed whatever
it was you loaned me. So, my thinking goes, I get something that costs me a
C note or two, fish with it for a season, then say "this is sweet" and stick
with it, or "this ain't quite right" and move on from there.

Which reminds me, can you make a rod? A few years back I bought a bunch of
rod building stuff from a friend who was trying to go into competition

Well, that's another route then, isn't it! Being... well... who I am, my
initial line of thinking when it comes to bamboo starts with "build the
tapering forms, construct a wrapping jig, ..." but once again, I have no
idea which taper I'd prefer, etc. So I'm back to getting a low (relatively
speaking) dollar rod of my own, borrowing when I can (did I thank you
already, by the way? :-) and figuring out what I want. THEN I can set
myself up for building.

A blank would certainly be a nice step along the road of "rolling my own"
but to be honest, the part about building a bamboo rod that most interests
me is the first dozen steps from splitting the culm to gluing up the blank.
I have a feeling that when (not "if", I fear...) I start building rods, they
are going to be well constructed, but the wrapping and varnish will likely
not be things of beauty.

All that said, let's discuss the possibility of that blank finding a new
owner :-)

Here come da judge! Yep, those should certainly make the trip. Perhaps I
can liberate a few of the vintage gems as well.

Will do!

Sounds like it's going to be a perfect weekend up here to sit in front of
the fireplace with a stack of books and a bottle of single malt.
