Wonderfully done, but sad. When I fished the Big Horn, I took a day
off because it was so hot (104 degrees on the river), and went into
Wyoming with the guide where it was *only* 95. We fished a very small
stream and caught what I thought were Greenbacks. The guide said they
were pure Cuts and that was the only game fish in the stream. We used
hopper imitations and had a wonderful time.

The Rainbows that I caught in the Big Horn looked like a normal
Rainbow, but if you looked closely, you could see a little pink on
both sides of the lower jaw. The guide said they were "mostly
rainbow", but along the way, somewhere, there was a Cut mixed in.
Beautiful fish nonetheless.

the second stream looks a lot like dick creek, a trib to the nantahala,
in the old north state. chocablock full of little rainbows. easy to catch,
too--i even saw forty catch several.

Lots of them around. The introduction of the Rainbow more than any other
factor has lead to the demise of the Cutts. It's interesting that in
environments where they have evolved together (the West Coast) they can
coexist without (with little?)crossbreeding but in states like Wyoming,
Colorado and New Mexico they can't.

The Greenbacks' range was almost entirely in Colorado. I think it's
pretty cool that they've gone from being "extinct" to having fishable
populations during the time I've lived in Colorado. There are now viable
populations in a number of watersheds in Colorado, but the most
extensive reintroductions have been in RMNP. I have a number of short
backpack trips planned for this Summer to fish for them in some of the
Alpine lakes.

comes to be. One of the scenarios includes some time due west of you, north
of the RMNP.

The introduction of the Rainbow more than any other
factor has lead to the demise of the Cutts.

It was my understanding, backed up in the movie, that our beloved brookies
did a number on the cutthroats too. Never thought much about it but the
fall spawn of the brookies means the fingerlings are mighty hungry come
spring when the cutts spawn- and those newly spawned cutts become breakfast
for the brookies.

I'm glad they included Bob Behnke in the movie. He's an interesting man,
very unprepossessing, easy to talk to, and obviously a central figure in the
reinvigoration of cutthroat trout.

to have HEAVY runoff this year, so later rather than earlier (unless you
want to hike in to a lake) is better.

I doubt it. I'm due to call him, I'll ask if he's fished since that day on
the Big T. He spends most of his free time on his mountain bike, so I think
the answer will be "no." With his legs and lungs, maybe he could carry me
up to one of those lakes and I'll do the casting. :-)

Hopefully some of RMNP lakes will be ice free by then. If not we'll find
something.

We'll squeeze in a weekend on *** creek too, Willi. Snowpack in the
San Juans is pretty anemic so far. bh
