.......the lighting was so bad I couldn't get much
depth of field. I might have to buy a Nikor right light.
These are mostly Blue Winged Olives, photographed less than
two hours ago in the Lower Madison, in Beartrap canyon,
right before the wind came up and chased us out.

nice, Sandy......one notable thing I have noticed before about your western
Baetis/BWO hatches is the range of
body coloration. I figure I am seeing multiple species, or
perhaps subspecies, as much of the other colors and markings are quite
similar.

.......or is it males and females?
I wondered the same thing Tom. The olive-bodied
ones don't have the red eyeballs.
I often have red eyeballs. especially on sunday mornings,
so maybe that's the male indicator.

Those bugs are about 3/16" long, so at F5.6
with a 105 macro lense and a closeup tube extension,
you have to get about 6" from the bug to shoot,
which isn't easy in moving water, and there is
no depth of field. On a brighter day, or maybe
if I bumped the asa up.....

I'll get better at this. I'm planning on making
this the year of the live bug photo.
