And DEET will melt a fly line pretty good too.

Cutters has DEET, but Cutters Advanced doesn't - it uses picaridin
(2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperidinecarboxylic acid 1-methylpropyl ester) . FWIW

Actually after doing more research on DEET "Diethyl Toluamide" it is a
pretty toxic substance to apply on your skin.
Not sure if I want to do it now after the 2005 study. Oh btw, Cutters
contains Diethyl Toluamide.
Think I'll stick to the Badger Bug Balm and a headnet and take my chances.

I prefer to take my chances with DEET rather than with West Nile virus
or Lyme disease.

DEET is powerful stuff and you have to be careful with
it but it works better than anything else I've tried
and I won't go into a buggy situation without it.

This may make you feel better about DEET:

Or maybe not.

The melting agent is more probably the carrier
than the DEET; an early carrier (e.g. 1980) was
acetone, a solvent for just the sort of plastics
used in fly lines (and rod finishes too.)

The active ingredient has been approved in Europe for years. I wouldn't be
surprised if picaridin-based products are all over the shelves in a variety
of names.

Not only that, Bayrepel, the EU Picaridin repellant, is quite a bit
stronger than Cutter Advance.

My experience with Picaridin is mixed. It worked well on the early
season mosquitoes but less well on the later season species here in
WI. According to their website that wouldn't be surpising.
