Fly-fishing merit badge

I didn't know that the Boy Scouts had a merit badge for
fly-fishing.http://www.scouting.org/factsheets/02-500.html Sad that it
is the least earned badge from 1911 to 2006, but then I don't know how
long it's been available.

This is a relatively new badge. It was "broken out" from the Fishing Merit
Badge in the last couple of years.

As the other poster said, it is relatively new. Getting involved is a
simple as calling your local scout troop and offering to help.

I've had the pleasure of helping two separate groups of boys obtain
this badge. I think I learned as much or more than they did. I took the
first group off to the Colorado river and one of the boys caught a 22"
bow on his first freeking cast. I'm on my third group now and they've
gotten through a woolly bugger and a pheasant tail, next week is a
parachute pattern. Their "graduation" trip is going to be in the
Smoky's the middle/end of October.

My son and I did a Father/Son vacation two years ago on Kelly Creek. We
completed the Fly Fishing Merit Badge on the 5 day trip. One of the best
times I have had with my son, it was very rewarding for both of us when he
catch a beautiful Westslope Cut on a Stimulator that he tied.
Unfortunately the leader of my sons group had never given out that badge
before. I offered the class and was going to teach most of it at home since
we live on a lake and finish up on a local river, I was surprised when I had
no interest from any of the other boys.

We will be heading into Kelly Creek next Thursday, this time my bride and
the new baby will be along, can't wait!

IMO, they're very comprehensive and well thought out. Someone did a good
job. A boy would really have to learn something to pass this test.

The last requirement, apropos of the ROFF C&R vs. C&K controversy, is:
"Using the fly-fishing techniques you have learned, catch two different
kinds of fish and identify them. Release at least one of them unharmed.
Clean and cook another fish."

I suggest a change to: "Clean and cook *and eat* another fish." :-)

BTW, why don't the Girl Scouts have a fly fishing merit badge? In
general, why are there so few women fly fishermen? Women have all the
physical skills necessary to fly fish. I know personally only two women
fly fishers. They're both guides. I tried to get my daughters
interested, but they wanted nothing to do with it. What's going on here?

This may get me in trouble, but I suspect its innate.

Men, if you want to meet women, take a dance class.

Women, if you want to meet men, take a fly fishing class.

Definitely will get you in trouble....my wife and two daughters
all fly-fish. I'm happy to report that my daughters get very
upset on the rare occasions that I go fishing without them.

I am preparing myself for the teenage years when I fully expect
to lose them. ;-(

That's great about your wife and daughters, and I hope you don't lose them.

You have to admit, though, that female flyfishers are the rare exception
to the norm. Just look at ROFF.

Oh, I forgot, we're a bunch of 13-year-old girls. :-)

I volunteered to counsel it for our local troop and there's a couple
kids interested but no takers yet. Of course it's over 100 freaking
degrees out with ugly humidity and the rivers in the high 80' s so not
much interest in doing anything right now.
