Well, at least gas prices have dropped. We're spending 2.46 here (10%
ethanol). A 50 cent drop in prices in less than 6 weeks is really nice
(but don't get used to it).

so, it'll be, what, only 3.30 or so in the yoop? it's 2.69
hereabouts...paid 3.02 just 10 days ago. market economies are very,
very strange when it comes to gas prices around here.

I saw $2.72 here in southeast Curdistan yesterday......lowest in
several weeks. This is a bit lower than it was when John and I left
here last year for the inaugural UPYERS. In fact, it's just about what
the price was in Baraga, on the res, and 10-20 cents lower than
everywhere else we went in the western U.P. If we pool our financial
resources (which, if you think about it, are bound to be considerably
more substantial than our collective wits) we should be o.k.

Meanwhile, it begins to look as if we may not have to mug Frank after
all. I've been tying like a madman for the past three weeks......THIS
TIME, I've been telling myself, I WILL NOT arrive (after ten months
prior notice) bereft of useable bugs and be reduced to rifling my
friends' fly boxes while they are off in the outhouse.....um.....though
I guess I WILL kinda miss the adrenaline rush. Anyway, I've been
enveloped in a dense cloud of fur, feathers, yarns, floss, chenille,
wire, pointy steel and whatnot for about 21 days. Sensibly, I think, I
paused briefly today to swamp out the car and begin looking for the
spoor of various bits of camping and fishing gear. What should present
itself to my startled and decidely bemused gaze? About fifteen fly
boxes that I haven't laid eyes on for the last twelve or thirteen
years! Hoo boy! Even BEFORE Wayne, Bill and George arrive, we're
going to be in possession of more fishooks than existed in all of
Michigan (well, what would become Michigan, anyway) prior to the 16th
century C.E.!

oh, by the way, in roughly 109 hours i'll be catching my first brookie
of the day (and the trip for that matter) just about the time john is
trying to convince the border patrol that he IS SO an american, and you
and frank are enjoying your first anal probes of the day.

Good news on the flies. I had a family emergency that almost swamped
my trip. Been tying, but have a couple of other issues to deal with.

"Almost" makes it sound like you've got it under control. Good news
for you and for us.

Do what you gotta do. We'll muddle through somehow.
