God has just become the proud owner of the best damn dog I ever had.
Jasmine, the 12 YO Cairn Terrier, is sitting by His right hand now, but
I'll certainly miss her sitting by mine.

Not much I can add but my condolences too.

Heck with keeping people alive and healthy longer. We've got to keep
dogs and cats alive and healthy longer. Too painful to have them go.

Sympathy.

Often taunted by trout. Almost entirely harmless. Really.

I've had to put down quite a few dogs and cats over the years. It never
gets easier -- always worse for me. But it's always been for the best.

Dogs and cats, unlike us, don't comprehend their own mortality, and they
don't dream up fairy tales to make their passage into oblivion more
palatable.

What I think is cruel is keeping aged, terminally ill people on life
support when their quality of life is finished and they're in
excruciating pain. I've seen it happen, it's degrading, and I hope to
God I don't leave this veil of tears that way.

Thanks, Nancy, and everyone else who posted and emailed their thoughts.
It does help.

Living will. I've had one since some time in the 80s. It consoles me
on bad days.

Thanks for the invitation - it sounds nice, but my vacation time is not my
own this year (again). I know nobody has probably ever heard this from
someone in Red Sox territory, but there's always next year.
