The irish have turned in one generation from being dreamy rural poets to some of the most viciously greedy (and, incidentally, quite racist) nations in Europe, and in my lifetime they have managed to cause horrendous damage through unchecked building to one of the most beautiful parts of the world, plunder the Atlantic with drift-nets for salmon, and pollute their own waters.
