I agree with js about the behavior of the classic.

Must be a deep south thing. Professional bass people have always
had class because there was little money in fishing and they did it
because they loved it.

I could probably have handled the distruction of the running light
since he is generally viewed as a high energy person, but throwing dead
fish back was totally unethical in my book.

I agree js.. There's a difference though between high energy and being
spoiled. The news said there is so much "pressure" on the fishermen in that
particular tournament that it caused his behavior to be the way it
was....(The same media in this land that says the reason Foley wanted sex
with underage boys is because he was abused and had a drinking problem). So
that gave IKE an excuse anyway....

I live in Alabama on Lay Lake, the lake Yelas won the classic on as well as
the classic being held here again in 2007. A lot of your "old school"
professionals are southerners.. Denny Brauer was a brick mason before
becoming a fisherman...(That's probably what's wrong with his back!). Bill
Dance of course needs no introduction. Ray Scott is still involved with a
lot of events involving fishing and still lives on that immaculate land in
south Alabama and the list goes on.....

Times are changing in our world and the "old timers" with their values and
morals are dying away and taking them to the grave with them. IKE is a good
example of a spoiled brat who probably hasn't worked a hard days work in his
life...

At least Forest Woods done the right thing regardless of what it cost's him.

Spoiled brat???? Where did you come up with that? He wasn't raised
wealthy? Now because your parents can put you through college you are a
silver spooner? Isn't the point of raising children to give them
opportunities we didn't have? My information about Ike's upbringing is
completely different from yours.
I don't mean to keep attacking your posts, and if you don't like Ike,
that is great, but you should really be accurate with your attacks.

The moral decay of society is caused by the "Old Timers" writing us off
because we do things differently than they do, therefore creating
tension and attitude on both sides of the ball. Nobody owes anyone
respect, I don't have to respect you just because you are older than me,
and you don't have to respect me at all. It has to be earned both ways,
but now days it is easier to just write someone off, rather than
seeing the good side of what they are offering, so the gap continues to
widen.
Just like the soccer mom's who don't want to keep score because it hurts
their kid's feelings when they lose. Guess what, that isn't real life,
people win, and people lose, the winners feel good, and the losers
should be figuring out why they lost and start preparing for their next
chance at winning.
My point being, don't write off everything Ike has accomplished just
because of a 10 second clip you saw on TV and a little piece Bassmasters
did on him showing what a prick he is (hey guess what, they benefit from
him being a bad guy). My opinion, the problem with morals, values,
whatever is the fact that a lot of people do not point the finger at
themselves, it is so easy to blame T.O. and Ike for the lack of morals
in society and therefore condemn a whole generation, as they are
glorified over and over and over again on all the media outlets.

The moral decay of society is caused by not having productive things
for people to do and by the I/Me attitude projected in the media IMHO.
If you don't believe we are a self centered society, you need only look
at the divorce rate. (around 52%) We have way too much leisure time
on our hands.

Today's generation has far less quality options to occupy their time
and far more recreational time choices with dire consequences and too
many are making bad choices. When my parents were young they had to
work with the family to produce food to eat and clothes to wear. I
don't know that my mother ever wore store bought clothes. We had
gardens and chickens in the city. They spent time harvesting the
garden and canning. Every season had something that had to be done or
preparing for something. We do hardly any of the fundementals any
more.

It seems to me that the gap between my parents and myself was HUGE. I
now have a full appreciation for the 'greatest generation,' being my
parents generation. They went to WWII for 4 years and people at home
united to support the effort. They industrialized the world. They
believed in civic duty. They had family values and believed in a
higher being that guided their behavior You may not believe in God,
that is your choice. I certainly have questions about biblical things
myself, but I am certain that a society that believes in a higher being
is better than one that does not. I am afraid that we are headed in
the wrong direction on this one.

I am sure there have been equally great generations, but it hasn't been
the last two. I have no qualms about saying that my generation
abandoned the values my parents had as soon as we were grown because
they seemed to restrictive. We are responsible for the beginning of
the decline.

They felt the same way about my generation and I felt pretty much about
them the way you do about us. Now that I am old enough to fully
apprecaite what they stood for, accomplished, and sacrificed for what
they believed, I am totally aware of how much my generation has eroded
the standards they set.

Respect? Respect your elders has always been a fundemental for me. If
for no other reason, like the tombstone said "As you are now, I once
was" Or elders need us and we will be them one day.

Cheers

Have you read Brokaws book? Im sure you have with the reference to the
greatest generation. My dad was in the 101st and landed in normandy on
d-day. You are so right when you and Brokaw penned them the greatest of the
generations.
Well written js..Im impresssed as well as speechless. I didnt think anyone
thought like that.(Can I have that put in print?). A lot of the old values
are going away with modern society.I would spoil the post entirely if I
added one word to it so ill just let it say what it said and be done...Lets
talk fishing. Thats what we love to do.

TY for your kind words. What my parents generation strived to be is
real to me because I witnessed it. In my youth I rebelled against it
and now I am pretty ashamed that I helped dismantle it.

As George Jones so aptly put it " I have had choices since the day I
was born, there were voices that told me right from wrong. Had I
listened I wouldn't be here today, living and dying with the choices
I've made"

Ah fishing, the pause that refreshes. I live on an 825 acre lake and
go every day that I can. Due to the lack of rain in our area I can
barely get my boat off the lift and if we don't get some soon I will
just be wishin I was fishin.

Caught some really nice large mouth on a basspro jighead with a
gamakatsu hook that I adorned with do it yourself pumpkin and blue
skirts.

I mentioned NetBait once before. They make a killer jig trailer.

Cheers

What state do you live in? I'm in Alabama, as you already know, and we
finally have gotten a little bit of rain.
I to live on the lake, Lay Lake, home of the 2002 Bassmasters Classic as
well as the classic coming up in 2007. From my understanding, and I could be
wrong, I think it will be held in the month of February here this year.
That's going to be loads of fun...10 degrees in the morning fishing on a
reservoir! At least if they were fishing the Tennessee River they might have
a chance to haul in some record smallmouth! I'm sure by then they will be
killing the "yellow tails" in the current. I'm eagerly waiting to see what
the pro's turn in at the weigh in. I'm sure they'll do well here as they
always have.
Speaking of jig as you did have you ever tried tipping a 1/8 or a 1/4 ounce
jig head with a fluke? That's what im tearing them up on here right now. The
"heads" and the "spots" are running with the shad so the catching pretty
easy right now. Any color will do as long as its white....

Well, Thanks again for the post. I've re-read it a couple of times now and
have it printed out. It says so much for so many but its ashamed that so few
will even consider the "ways" of times past. We have no choice but to move
forward until we move on beyond here one day....
Thanks again.....

I am your western neighbor. Mississippi.

I will try the fluke even though I don't know yet what it is.

I am really a white perch fisherman by choice but have really gotten
into bass this year for some reason. I am determined to catch a 11+
before spring.

I have a friend that works at the local basspro, so he will set me
straight on flukes.

Netbait makes a Paca Craw in a Bama Craw color. It is awesome.
