Thanks to a freak ice storm atop the Blue Ridge Mountains on Wednesday night, FWIW, I put a couple of pix up on abpf. The ice coating on the trees must have been at leat 3/4". I photographed a few pieces of ice I picked up. I placed a quarter on one for scale. A second image shows a lot of downed trees on the Rose River trail. In the worst-hit areas, the tops of nearly every tree had been broken off as though a lawn mower had gone through. The damage was just unbelievable. A worker at the Wayside at Big Meadows told me they were told to get out on Wed night when the ice fog rolled up the mountains. She said it took them an hour to get down the 7 mile fire road to the valley. Joe F. |
