......ok. There may be a *few* Mac virus like things out there.
But the ratio is still very bad for Microsoft (few, if any, for Mac,
many for windows).
Microsoft likes to say "we have the most viruses because we
have the market share, so they target us only."

There may be some truth to that. But it is ALSO because
windows is a lot easier to exploit--because of poor OS and browser
design choices. The examples are too numerous to list here.

When/if Apple gains marketshare they will have nearly as
many viruses as MS.

I don't know anyone who likes Microsoft software.

Billy Gates is probably not too unhappy with it.

Funny, I haven't had any major problems with it. All my applications seem
to work, haven't had a virus since a harmless word macro virus that
requires a replacement of normal.dot in about 1994. Haven't had an OS
crash that required much more than a reboot. All in all, less than 2% of
my time goes toward sys management of my desktop/laptops.

I might not love every piece of their software--I avoid IE like the plague,
but that's hardly a statement of doom for the platform. I might not
appreciate their business practices, but that's got little to do with the
end product.

THAT'S what ya just gotta love about this place.

wait just a minute, Wolfie......Are you suggesting that you
think he knows at least someone who likes a product,
or range of products, which a few tens of millions of people PAID money
for?? Ok, maybe a couple, but no doubt, at least 99% don't like it, right??
Tom
hey, Valley Creek is looking pretty fishable right now......

I didn't buy it by intention. I got it with the computer. No choices
of OS there. Not that I mind it. While I did once know how to use a
command line interface for everything, point and click is a nice
thing. Good of the Mac people to make it popular enough for someone
to make for PCs I've been using it since 1.x.

I won't go into what I don't like about the company and their
policies, but I find a graphic OS to be very convenient to use.

I' had this happen a couple times a few years back. My kids wouldn't allow
the Norton updates to run so after a short time the version was old enough
to be scooped by a new virus that usually attacked Norton itself.

I would simply copy down a free trial version of Panda. Run that which would
clean off the virus. Re-install Norton and then get a fresh update then
uninstall Panda. I would think other "alternative" virus software would do
the same trick.

Becky has gotten a virus of some sort on her laptop. Unfortunately, it
prevents us from running the virus protection/removal software (Norton) so
we can't even identify it, let alone do anything about it. A brief check
online suggests that finding any reference to it based on a description of
the effects might be a long and tedious job. I'm hoping that someone here
can at least point me in the right direction.

When she turns the computer on everything runs slowly and, at apparently
random intervals, one or more copies of IE will open......sometimes as
many as 15 or so in rapid succession, all accessing the same site....or
trying to, at any rate. Last night, I was able to open an IE window
myself and begin downloading all of the latest updates from Norton, but
the download couldn't be completed and I couldn't run the software.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wolfgang
