Many years ago, I fished for sturgeon near Kettle Falls, Wa., about 14 years ago they made it all catch and release in the area. There is a fairly decent population of sturgeon in this riverine system. I've hooked sturgeon while walleye fishing that were even larger than the one speared in the article.
