I have a friend who is moving to Ormond Beach, just north of Daytona Beach,
Florida...so we loaded the trailer up with our Harleys and headed south, thinking that on the way home we would visit Daytona Beach for Bike week and get a t-shirt... Statistics: 1) 1660 miles of road fun in Florida. 2) $2650+ of transmission repairs to the van.... PROLOGUE Although I could have done a bit of fishing just by packing my rod, South Central Florida would truly be a great place to explore with kayaks. Lots of canals and swamps and bayou looking water that was just begging for a person to get out and enjoy... DEEPEST THOUGHT Being duly prepared, my friend and I had went our separate ways and I was thoroughly lost by noon of day one. I followed my usual plan when such happened on my motorcycle and just kept on gong until I saw something I recognized. I watched the sun set over the water... Then I realized that the sun does not set on the water near Daytona...it rises, therefore, I was on the Gulf coast. By merely keeping the big water on my right I could return to Daytona. I suppose I could have asked directions but, after all, "What good are directions to a man that's lost?" DUMBEST ACTION One evening at a small town gas station/corner store, with high winds, menacing black clouds and driving rain the locals were warning me to get off the road - tornadoes were coming! . . . I took shelter in a trailer. DUH! GREATEST REVELATION While admiring the waters and wishing I had my rod with me it occurred to me that Waldo was from Florida. So, I thought, if he was in Florida without his fly rod WWWD (what would Waldo do)? I immediately proceeded to get my face slapped by some of the prettiest ladies in some of the finer establishments in Florida. The day degenerated in such fashion until I found myself in places a decent cockroach wouldn't frequent, getting slapped by true candidates for the Jerry Springer show. Then I realized that my wife, beautiful person that she is, must truly love me. EPILOGUE While I had great fun in Florida and had truly planned on turning around and heading right back down to North Carolina for the shad fishing, indeed I had prior clearance from my beloved, it would be fiscally irresponsible due to the unforeseen transmission repairs. I will have to forego that trip although several others are still planned. After all, even at our age, there is always next year.... john |
