What a question,, there are many best, here are just a few The rig most use is a Slip weight rig,,, weight, then swivel, leader then hook, The cat never feels the weight as the line slides through it when the take the bait, one of the best on the bottom rigs, especially for Blue cats Also some use a drop weight rig, three way swivel, with a short leader to the hook and longer one to the weight, this is fished "tight" lined,, great for moving water. In still water where you don't have to throw very far, nothing beats a circle hook baited with a chicken liver, and no weight (wrap, don't tie, about a foot of sewing thread around the liver baited hook, this keeps the liver on better than any other method, (it's fast, it's cheap, and it's easy) Now my personal all around best rig is two StandOut hooks (see this web page http://ezknot.com/SUHooks.html ) 12 inches apart tied to the main line, with a 1 OZ or bigger weight 6 inches below the bottom hook, then a "small" bobber a foot or more above the top hook, this keeps both baits off the bottom, although the float is carried underwater by the weight, it is there only to keep the bait off the bottom. (this rig can also be used with a floating "slip float", for those who like to watch a float, just set you float stop knot at the water depth) At night , in the summer time, the cats come in close to shore to feed, the later in the night, the closer they come in. I have caught many huge cats in 2 to three feet of water, close to the bank, late at night. In most cases just a weight, hook, and bait is all you need to cat fish, you can catch "some" cats (if there are any cats there) just doing it any old way :-) -- Rodney Long, Inventor of the Mojo SpecTastic "WIGGLE" rig, SpecTastic Thread, Nutri Shield insect repellent. ,Stand Out Hooks ,Stand Out Lures, Mojo's Rock Hopper & Rig Saver weights, and the EZKnot http://www.ezknot.com |

We do our catfish fishing in the Ohio River. Our usual rig consists of
either 14 or 20 pound test yellow mono line threaded through an egg sinker or bank sinker to a large swivel. About three feet of twelve pound test mono is attached to swivel. we use 4/0 to 8/0 wide bend hooks. The larger hooks are used with whole bluegills or shad for bait. If we cut the live bluegill or shad, then we use the smaller hooks. I have seen chicken liver mentioned on here for bait. If you want the big cats, forget the chicken liver and use large bluegills, suckers, or shad for bait. Sometimes, they like the bait cut and sometimes they like it live. If you cut it, it has to be very fresh or it won't work. Change cut bait often. There are no blue cats in this part of the Ohio River. We get channel cats and flatheads. Some of them are very large. When we fish from a boat and don't need to cast as far, we use the 20 pound test main line and a 14 pound test leader. You can land a very large catfish on the 12 or 14 pound test leader if you have the drag set right and are patient. We use 9 and 10 foot catfish rods. We like the white colored rods because they are easy to see at night! We hit the river around dusk and come home around midnight. It seems like the cats stop biting around 11:30 or so on most nights!
