Default Baby 1- hooks

I love this lure, but the hooks tangle and I get a lousy catch-to-strike
ratio. Would I be better off replacing the #4 and #6 with a single #2? If
so, would this hook be better placed on the belly or at the rear?

Marty , I would personally switch to a Triple grip on the belly, and a
Daiichi or GAmmi on the tail. I really like a #2 on the rear, and a #4
on the belly.. (depending on the size of the crankbait...)...

This is what has worked for me, and I throw a ton of
crankbaits...(doesn't necessarily mean I catch a lot of fish though :-))...

I'ld go with #4 Excalibur rotating hooks. If you want to be able to burn it
a little faster go with an Owner tournament trailer on the rear in a color
to match your bait.

I used to take both hooks off and put a bigger treble on the belly, but
I found I missed a lot of fish that I saw hit the bait. So I've taken to
putting a bigger triple grip treble on the belly in combination with a
small treble or even a single hook on the tail. I put a piece of clear,
plastic tubing on the shank of the rear hook before putting it on, then
wedge it up over the split ring and hook hanger to make the hook stand
out from the body on a semi-rigid mount. That's worked really well for
me, and I haven't missed many fish with either the tiny (like a #8)
treble or a #4 single hook on the rear. I do play all the fish very
gingerly unless I get a good enough look to be sure the bigger, belly
hook is buried.

A big rear treble and small belly treble really messes up the action of
the bait in my experience.

Rich,

YOu have had trouble with the action of Larger fat baits like the 1- and
the Balsa-B by using this configuration (small belly hook, large rear
hook)? I have had action problems with thinner, tighter running
crankbaits, but the larger wide wobble cranks seem to hold their action
ok. Honestly I don't throw a lot of 1- cranks, but I throw a ton of
Balsa-B's. I am definitely not discounting your experience, just
haven't had the same experience, at least with wide wobbling/fatter cranks.

I've never tried it with a Bagleys, because they don't have the hook
tangle problem to start with. I just replace those with better quality,
like sized trebles.

I've never done it with a bigger 1 minus either, because I simply don't
use any one-minus plugs other than the baby. A bigger rear treble
definitely takes a lot of the 'wander' out of the baby-1 minus. A bigger
belly hook doesn't seem to have any effect on its tracking.

Thank all for the input. I have to do something if I continue to use this
bait.

A question for Rich: when you say you put a "bigger" triple grip on the
belly, what size do you use?

I don't really know. I've got a bunch of 'em in a box, and put on one
that's noticeably larger than the OEM hook. Maybe a #2?
