I love this lure, but the hooks tangle and I get a lousy catch-to-strike ratio. Would I be better off replacing the #4 and #6 with a single #2? If so, would this hook be better placed on the belly or at the rear? I used to take both hooks off and put a bigger treble on the belly, but I found I missed a lot of fish that I saw hit the bait. So I've taken to putting a bigger triple grip treble on the belly in combination with a small treble or even a single hook on the tail. I put a piece of clear, plastic tubing on the shank of the rear hook before putting it on, then wedge it up over the split ring and hook hanger to make the hook stand out from the body on a semi-rigid mount. That's worked really well for me, and I haven't missed many fish with either the tiny (like a #8) treble or a #4 single hook on the rear. I do play all the fish very gingerly unless I get a good enough look to be sure the bigger, belly hook is buried. A big rear treble and small belly treble really messes up the action of the bait in my experience. |
