I bought some of that trout power bait, the gooey stuff you roll up and
place around the hook. How do I fish this stuff. Let it float?, sink it down? Drag it around? Dave |

Power Bait is great stuff if you use it right. Remember that there is
floating and sinking PB as well as the formed stuff, so ya need to use it in the right applications. Floating works great when the fish are down low. Just let the bait float off the bottom a foot or so and they will swing by and pick it up. The sinking stuff works the same just in the opposite direction, Usually I just hang it under a bobber and then kick back and drink a beer. Hell, I will even take my plugs and mash some into the split rings just for a little added scent/taste. Hmmmm... May be I need to do an episode on this... Let it float?, sink it down? Drag it around? Dave I've never used PB other than from shore. I find it can work very well for stocked "the truck was here last week" trout. But depends on the waters. Fish it as you would a worm but don't expect little nibbles. Trout won't play with it. It's usually a nothing is happening at all or the fish has swallowed it and is taking off scenario. Use the sinking kind under a bobber. Use the floating kind with a split shot. If the fish are skittish, make a sliding sinker rig with an egg sinker. Bear in mind that if you are casting from shore into fairly shallow water, say 5-7 ft depth, you might as well as fish it off the bottom since it'll float up. Plus the wind won't mess with your bobber. PB holds better if you can use a treble hook, the way some carp fishermen might with their doughballs. But check the regulations of your state if that's permitted. |
