Thanks so much, Chuck and Joel & even Wolfgang ;-) You're welcome. I promise to get off my a** and hit the Smokies late this fall. I'm curious Wolfgang - where in Tennessee did you fish and for **what**? Not to speak for Wolfgang (I'm sure he'll be along shortly), but one place I know he fished in Tennessee was on the Little River in and above the Elkmont campground on the TN side of the GSMNP. And he was fishing for wild rainbows (most of the browns are a bit lower on the river and the brookies are at higher elevations). I know because I was camping there at the time. :-) In my previous post I alluded to you taking advantage of those waters while living in Nashville, and that's because I just finished driving over 2K miles roundtrip from Austin, TX to the park so I could camp for 6 days. And Wolfgang drove from somewhere up in South Canuckistan/Cheeselandia to get there. Chuck Vance (so we have little sympathy for someone who can make it to the park in 3-4 hours :-) |

I'm a novice and my family and I have an opportunity to go to Big Sky,MT this August. Any suggestions on when would be better ie. early/ mid/late August? I love fishing for trout. Used to do quite a bit in New York state. Since moving to Tenness The situation here (in Montana) is not good. The fishing right now (today, for instance) is as good as it ever gets. But it shouldn't be. On June 20th the Yellowstone should be flooding, raging and unfishable. Instead it's cool (still) but low and clear, and the Salmon Flies are hatching 2-3 weeks early. By August the guides will have to put roller skates on the bottoms of their driftboats. High altitude hike-ins will be all that's left..........if the whole state isn't in flames. This could be a bad fire year. |

Well, it seemed as if half of it burned last year, might as well finish the job. As a midwesterner I'm used to droughts that last a year or two. The decades long things you guys experience out west are a climactic incognita for me. OTOH, I hear that eastern Montana is actually wet this year. I'm sure the rattlesnakes appreciate the extra cover. ;^). g.c. |

The Little Big Horn flooded a lot of floors. But moisture from rain dries up quickly around here. We rely on all-summer-long snow melt to keep the rivers up. And the snow pack is dismal. -- /* Sandy Pittendrigh --O0 ** http://montana-riverboats.com */ |
