Cancun fishing

after the hurricane you'll be luck if you can even get there !

Last I read (Sunday afternoon) the track was projected to hit down
around Tulum. And they're getting pretty good at bouncing back after
one of these big blows down there. A lot of the resort buildings south
of Cancun are fairly new, and built to a fairly high standard,
particularly those built by American based companies. That was an oft
repeated observation when we were in Cancun in January of 2006 after
Wilma (I think. Who can keep them all straight?)

A few years ago, there was a small billboard for a flats guide as you
entered the outskirts of Cancun. Was on the left side of the road, near
the
mangroves.-

I've been travelling that road to the hotel zone for over 10 years
every January. I don't remember seeing that particular sign although
there are lots of billboards between the airport and the hotel zone,
or did you mean on the highway from the airport to Cancun City west of
the lagoon?

I expect there's some decent fishing in the canals at both ends of the
lagoon but the surface traffic might spook the fishies a bit. I've
heard there are tarpon in there at times but have never seen any when
we've gone in and out on the diveboats. I remember seeing a couple of
fellers spearfishing in the canals and they had what looked like
snappers. I guess they had made a deal with the crocs (which I have
seen).

The lagoon is very shallow but I've never seen anyone fishing it, at
least not on the hotel zone side.

There's some nice shallow sheltered areas off the beach down around
Akumal but I don't know if they're worth fishing. Puerto Morelos
advertises fishing but I think it's more deep water. I've also seen a
variety of fish in the cenotes close to the salt water down there.
There's one in particular that we dived and snorkeled one day, Casa
Cenote near Akumal, that might be worth trying. Lots of salt water
fish juveniles hang out in there until they've grown. I suppose it's
safer for them than the open sea. I saw barracuda, snapper, and I seem
to recollect groupers. Also a baby green moray but I doubt you'd want
to catch any of those. I'd be cautious about dusk fishing though.
Apparently the mangroves are full of crocs although we saw none and we
swam the length of the cenote which is like a river about 20' deep
with a pond at one end and about a 1/4 mile long.

Was on the left side maybe a mile before civilization. May not be there
anymore. Was maybe 6 years ago last time I was there.

If I'm in the right spot there's now a waterworld park right about
there, close to the bridge where the canal goes out to Punta Nizuc.
There's been quite a bit of work done on that stretch of road over the
last few years too. New median and lots of planting going on. I'll try
to remember to look when we go in next January.
