![]() "Larry L" wrote in message ... "Conan The Librarian" wrote Ah, but by using your tippet rings, you'd only have to buy a couple a year, whatever the brand. :-) True, but one of the things life has taught me it that the "couple a year" are far MORE likely to be needed when far from sources of less common brands ... fwiw, I too like the Maxima tapered a lot, but, I only know of one store ( 993 miles from where I sit to type this ) that stocks them and I don't trust stockpiling nylon for a tangly day .. I'm sorry you guys lost me, what are these tippet rings? -tom |

![]() tippet rings add weight to the leader, i dont care how small they are...I tie all my own for my store and another one here in pa..I have never had a problem with the furled leaders I make..They even float(mono) by adding a floatant or line dressing..as for turning over big flies we have been using them for everting from smallies to salt water fish..maybe its the proportions in your formulas.. -- sandfly sandfly/bob flyfishing instructor, tying and shop owner http://tinyurl.com/3x53lq N.J.B.B.A.2215 formally bucks now tioga co. pa. there's a fine between sane and Insane ! It's not clear who you are addressing with this response. (Quoting some of the text is useful.) To respond to your comments: Tippet rings add some weight, but it's nominal, and any leader that floats poperly will float a (proportionately-sized) tippet ring. Mono furled leaders can be made to float (though not as well as thread, IME), but they still have some of the same characteristics that a regular mono leader does. The reason I sometimes choose (thread) furled leaders is because they are supple, and lay out smoothly and don't coil on the water like mono leaders. I have made them from 3/0 thread, and I know they'll turn over big flies, but IMHO that's not their best selling point. Again, I'm not sure who your response was intended for. Some of us do like furled leaders, even though we don't presume they are the best solution for all fishing. Chuck Vance |

Chuck Vance Chuck, I did order the rings, and received them yesterday, just had to try them. They are great! About the weight, they are very light and so tiny that the leader and tippet material would keep the tiny ring afloat. The other thing I like about the ring is you don't lose any length off your leader once you've tied onto the ring, just add tippet. No hinge when casting, and cast as if the connection wasn't there. Great turnover and presentation. I used a 9' 5x leader and 14" 6x tippet. The safety pin is a great idea to house the rings. It did take me some time to make my knots to the ring. I would tie them to the tippet before going out into the field. -tom |

They are just so much more convenient and useful. Save you money on leaders as well. Not to mention time and effort on the water. TL MC |
