When fishing crankbaits, should you point the rod towards the bait or
keep it at an angle?

I think this is just a matter of personal preference.

For spinnerbaits, I generally point the rod about 10 degrees off the bait,
which gives me maximum sweep for a hookset.

On the other hand, with crankbaits I hold the rod out at about a 45 degree
angle to the line so the rod will absorb some of the shock of a strike.

That's just my general practice. When fishing around cover, I find myself
lifting, lowering, or sweeping the rod to one side or the other to control
how the bait tracks.

I do a lot of what Joe says, but find that "it depends." It depends upon
the size of the crankbait and if it's a big billed, deep diving crankbait.
I've found for deep divers and BIG lures, pointing the rod at the lure helps
take some of the pressure off the rod, which reduces pressure on the rod and
allows a more relaxed grip. This in turn causes less fatigue and hand
cramps.

I don't know what one SHOULD do, but I greatly prefer the rod at an angle to
the line.
