How do you keep your flies organized?

I have Morrel Styrofoam fly boxes for fishing. But I also have a lot
of "extra" flies that I don't want to carry around. I may tie a dozen
flies of a given size/pattern at a time when I'm on a roll. But most
of those are just "extras" until I'm needing to re-load a fly box due
to loss of flies.

How do you guys keep the "extras" organized until you need them? Or
do you just have a ton of fly boxes?

Just a curious newbie question.

For me, it's a "ton of fly boxes". For fishing, I have a separate
boxes for dries, nymphs, & streamers; but I also have separate boxes
for other flies for other than trout fishing, whcih means a box (or
two or three) of Clousers, a box (or two) of shad flies, a box (or
four) of salmon fishing flies, and.... well, you get the picture.

Most of my problem with "extra" flies stems from tying my own. I
can't seem to justify sitting down to tie just a half dozen of
anything, and the next thing I know, I've got more GRHEs than I'll use
in ten years. Those I just stick an another box somewhere that I
won't be able to find when I need it.

I had started a long response to this question describing the Bug
Luggage boxes and C&F System boxes with interchangeable inserts when I
realized you are probably asking about warmwater fishing.

For my bass fishing storage I pretty much go the "ton of fly boxes"
route. I even use some cheap old Plano boxes (with compartments) that I
bought back in my lure fishing days.

On the water I use some modified small Plano boxes (no compartments)
that I've added "bristle tack" inserts to for holding the flies in place.

I typically have about 3 fly boxes in my vest all the time. I use the
cortland foam boxes with magnetic "latching" sort of deal.

I take what dries I might want in one, nymphs in another, and
streamers in the last. I mark them on the outside, and try to keep
them in the same pockets all the time so I dont need to think about it
too much. I find doing this keep the floatant off my nymphs, and the
sinko of my my dries and nymps.

It always seems I dont have the flies I want when I hit the water, or
when I do they end up in the trees... but most of the time it works
out.

every few fishing trips I will take them all out, check the hooks, re-
tie or re-organize. In my truck I have one more that I keep my salty
flies in for those striper trips out in the bay.

At my tying bench I keep the new ties or extras in clear 12 section
clear plastic containers I buy from Uline at www.uline.com and TRY to
organize in a reasonable way.

I bought the older version of the following. It came with all (5) large fly
boxes and (4) of the small. I use the large boxes for larger flies, such as
attractors, streamers, steelhead and terrestrials and the smaller boxes for
small dries and nymphs. So far I'm very happy with the setup. All my flies
are in one place and I pull out the boxes that I will need for the day or if
drift boat fishing, canoeing or pontooning, you can take them all where
storage space is not an issue.

It now sold with (4) main compartments boxes and you can purchase the other
boxes that fit the pouches separately.

I'm also new to the sport, but I've been looking for something to use all
the diabetes test strip cannisters (about the size of a 35mm film
cannister) for - this may be the answer.

First, I set up 16 library tables and sorted all the flies, hooks,
lures, etc., that I own. I then measured each and entered the data into
an Excel spreadsheet, from which I optimized the requirements with
regard to volumetric data. I then designed the required tooling to have
custom containers CNC'ed from optimized material, such a worm-proof
plastics for the softs and aromatic cedar for those flies requiring
protection from insects. I then printed out labels and a
cross-referenced catalog with acquisition and usage data, results, etc.
I then built another room (well, OK, so I made Settlesworth build it)
onto good ol' Beefeater Hall, complete with climate control, fire
suppression, and laser alarm system. While it may seem excessive, I
must say that the some 1000 hours and nearly quarter of a million
dollars wast...er, invested into the system thus far at least
kinda-sorta seems to perhaps make things maybe marginally easier than,
oh, say, see-through 35mm cans, Plano boxes, egg cartons/trays, grocery
meat trays, baby food jars, sheet cork glued to luan, or any of many,
many, many other myriad simple, inexpensive (some even free...) and
readily-available containers and devices suitable to storing
flies...well, unless I get any new stuff...then, I have to redo
everything to make room...I mean, it's not like I could just go to
Wal-Mart and get another 4 buck Plano box or something,
dontchaknow...hey, as always, YMMV...

I think you SHOULD go to Wal-Mart and get another Plano box. You could use
all the money you save to buy more anchor chain for your belly
boat.......and maybe an oxy-acetylene torch and gasoline powered abrasive
circular saw to cut your way free in the (admittedly unlikely, but
nevertheless dire) event that you should happen to miscalculate tidal
stresses or something.

I do the same, I tie a dozen of the same fly and then place then place
them in a Plano compartment box that goes in one of these:

I have a few boxes for dry, streamer, nymph, salmon, bass and crappies,
sal****er, etc. When I go on a trip, I just load the boxes in the bag
according just in case I have to reload the boxes in my vest.
