This sort of imprecision is a good generic example of statements that lead to these flame wars. In that one sentence are so many opportunities for misinterpretation (not the least of which are myriad differing meanings and implications of "bull****"), it's no wonder things spiral away so quickly when one poster comments on one interpretation when the other poster meant something else entirely. IME, ROFF does not lend itself to subtleties. Other people pile on to one black or white interpretation or the other; and before you know it, everyone is shouting; but nobody's listening or even looking for the gray. Of course, I think I probably know what you meant by your statement, but I've been here a while. Most here do not share the proper context and are too eager to impart their personal inferences. As for anything being everyone's business, I disagree. Yes, an open forum makes everything and anything available for public comment; but that does not mean everyone should. All of which is eminently sensible.....except for the implicit (and often explicitly stated) assumption that the problem is caused by, or at least almost invariably exacerbated by, inherent limitations in a text based medium. This is simply not the case. Insofar as ROFF lacks subtlety (usually, if not quite always, the case), it is by no means by virtue of deficiencies or inadequacy in the written language per se. Certainly, there are visual and audible cues in the spoken language that are not available in written communications (emoticons notwithstanding), but the compensatory resources available in the latter are vast and exquisitely evolved. I think I hardly need to go into a detailed description or even a list of great works of literature for you to agree to this much. Unfortunately, this leaves us with a highly restricted set of viable optional explanations for what routinely occurs here......a list that is hard to reconcile with a belief in widespread good faith, good intentions, and good reading/writing skills......or even a justifiable hope therefor. ![]() Wolfgang sitting on a park bench...... |

You my friend are a liberal piece of ****.. Just a hunch, but I'm guessing that for you, that's a redundancy. Any draft dodger should be taken out back and promptly shot for treason.. I don't care who you are... Are you including those who intentionally avoided being drafted through entirely legal means? 'Cause if so, methinks the Vice President's office may want to speak with you. :-( If you mean those who fled the country to avoid induction, well, the President pardoned them 30 years ago, so as you said, "Like him or not, right or wrong, he had the support to do it. It is done and we are there, deal with it suck it up and shut the hell up." Like it or not, Iraq was needed in many ways Really? Name one that's unrelated to obscene profits for petroleum interests or defense contractors. |

True; but alas, not equally or universally amongst those here. Also true. However, I have a hard time believing that a certain clarity of expression and minimally penetrating analysis are out of reach for most due to a lack of native ability. The root cause, I maintain, is a lack of effort grounded in indifference to truth and basic decency. On the other hand, maybe what I assume to be your position is right. Maybe only you, me, and a small handful of others in this assemblage are capable of grasping anything as abstruse and convoluted as what we're discussing here. ![]() Wolfgang |
