Can anybody recommend a light weight, very inexpensive, graphite rod from someplace like Dick's? TIA, Bud You'll find that for the most part equipment like Rods and Reels have become pretty inexpensive, most of that having to do with all major manufacturers having them made in China. If you're a freshwater fisherman, your state fishing license cost probably went up. You need to specify the type of fishing and maybe targeted species if you want any advice in choosing. If I may... Fishing gear HAS come a long way in the last 20 years. Graphite rods are getting good, reliable, and cheap. Even fly rods. But keep in mind when it comes to the reels, even with simple spinning reels, you really do get what you pay for. You will feel a huge difference in the basic reels you had say back in 1985-87 with todays multiple ball bearing reels. Even more since the 60s and 70s. (I read old field and streams a lot) I personally like to stick to reels with 3 or more bearings, and the instant anti-reverse feature on spinning reels give them a really nice tight feel. You can cheap out on the rod a little, but I don't like cheaping out on the reel too much, especially if you plan to chase bigger fish, or use light line where you need to rely on your drag to keep from breaking off the line. Penn is making more affordable reels these days and still stands behind their warranties. If you come up with something specific, I might be able to get you a good price if you can't find what you need. Lloyd M http://www.mainetackle.com |
