This review surely smacks of obscene consumerism: "A must for the Rich Fishing Addict, August 28, 2005 By G. Collector - See all my reviews If you have unlimited funds and time this book provides the backbone for a lifetime of fishing trips to exotic locales. " Gee, and I don't have it. How 'bout you, Richard? d;o) The book is extremely consumerist and elitist. It's pretty much porn for fly fishermen. I'm sure you're familiar with the genre. Orvis has mastered it. When people know that you like fly fishing they give you the strangest, most useless, kitschy stuff. T-shirts with "bite me" and such. :-) Fly-fishing porn is at least better than that. What surprised me was that I've fished in 18% (9 in 50) of the places named in the book -- mostly the ones the ones in my more-or-less familiar parts of this country. You don't have to be rich to fish Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, California, not to mention Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington, Utah, and even Nevada. Those of us in the Pacific Coast and Rocky Mountain West are fortunate. An important part of fly fishing, for me, has imagining and anticipating a new place or a new species. (More often than not, the reality doesn't live up to the dream.) The person who gave me the book knows that, so it was a thoughtful gift. -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

North America is probably over-represented, and the travel information is geared to the American angler. But it touches on all the fantasy destinations that come up in ROFF: Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, etc. The most intriguing one, which I'll read next, is Zambia: Tiger Fish on the Zambezi River. :-) You wouldn't have to be rich to fish in Idaho if you lived in Idaho, Mike. Gas would be your biggest cost, so share the ride (but not with LaCourse). :-) -- Cut "to the chase" for my email address. |

Most of the places I hear about I will never fish and to be honest I donŽt really want to. I never did. I always tried to make the most of the opportunities I had. I have been quite successful in that, and have nothing to complain about. I am not envious of others who can do these things, and it is basically irrelevant that I canŽt, or donŽt want to, I am merely happy for them, that they enjoy it so much. I always was happy for people who enjoyed their fishing. As it turns out, I will not be doing much more fishing anyway, either here or anywhere else. Force of circumstance. Just how it is. One thing that all the nastiness and silliness can not take away, is your love and enjoyment of fishing, so I would not be overly worried what anybody here might say. It wont affect that at all. I'm talking about pure and simple irony ("obscene consumerism" criticism, followed by......wait for it......... ta daaa ..... obscene consumerism.) Ya gotta love it. Mayby you prefer the word hypocrisy. That works fo me. But, either way, no art involved. Dave |
