![]() "Calif Bill" wrote Looks like a monthly rental for a nice 4x4 SUV is about $2k. Doubt if you could do much better buying reselling, including insurance. Might save $3-400, but is that worth the time and hassle? I think you are correct, not likely to be worth added hassle and risks. |

I can rent a 4x4 from AVIS (great Corporate rate) for about $1400. Seems to be some others that might even be cheaper. I would check on the same in Chile, may be equal or approximately the same cost. For less than $2k, not worth the hassle. |

Since I posted this morning I found mention on on ex-pat forum of 250 USD/ week from the Toyota dealer in Esquel .... certainly not worth extra hassle if that is even close |

I run into this all the time in my travels, and occasionally have to return a car after 2 weeks, wait until after midnight, then re-rent. Or drop off one rental and pick up another from a different company. Since one-way fees are so ginormous, it means returning to the airport mid-trip. Long-term options (other than the above) include buy-back deals (where a dealer sells you a car, assists with all the paperwork and title transfer, then agrees to purchase it back when you are done), leases, or long-term hires with a driver. Another option is to find a local expat who wants the trip of lifetime in exchange for you paying all the gas and food....this is cheaper by far than renting (where you need to pay the gas anyway). --riverman |
