Default world traveler question

Each day I do a little research on Patagonia and write an e-mail or two to
start developing contacts there.

One thing that has popped up is the high cost of renting a vehicle.

It occured to me that maybe I could buy a used one ( probably 4x4 ), use
it 60 days, and re-sell it before flying home .. for less than renting
for that period. Before I give this more thought and research, let me
ask .... is there some hidden ( to me ) reason why this is an absurd idea
unworthy of pursuing?

Have your ever sold a car to the salesman you bought it from?

Looks like a monthly rental for a nice 4x4 SUV is about $2k. Doubt if
you could do much better buying reselling, including insurance. Might
save $3-400, but is that worth the time and hassle?

I think you are correct, not likely to be worth added hassle and risks.

Looking at a month in Costa Rica. I can rent a 4x4 from AVIS (great
Corporate rate) for about $1400. Seems to be some others that might even be
cheaper. I would check on the same in Chile, may be equal or approximately
the same cost. For less than $2k, not worth the hassle.

Thanks for the advice ... only problems I've found 'recorded' thus far
revolve around border crossings between Argentina and Chile and not having
"the right" vehicle paperwork ... apparently more than just a 'pink slip'

planning a x-ing ) I hear.

I would rent. You could easily get stuck with a car no one is willing
to buy back. Besides, renting usually gets you a good car. While
driving in Europe some years ago, we could drive in Switzerland,
Germany, and France, renting a Saab 9000S at Zurich airport. However,
we could NOT travel in any other country. We wanted to go to Italy,
but couldn't - insurance wasn't valid there.

I *know* for sure you can rent just about anything in Coyhaique which
is near the lakes district and in what is considered Patagonia.

Things are much cheaper in Chile, so I doubt buying and then reselling
a car would be worth the trouble, and you may have to have a Chile
driver's license for that. Your American driver's license is all you
need to rent.

There are car rental places at the above link. Call/write and see if
you can travel into Argentina *AND* return without any problems.

Dave
(I'm heading down in about a month and should come back with more
details.)

Since I posted this morning I found mention on on ex-pat forum of 250 USD/
week from the Toyota dealer in Esquel .... certainly not worth extra hassle
if that is even close

Buy a good VCR and make a movie.
If nothing else the trip should be worth an artical in some fly-
fishing mag. Maby you can get Jeep or Land Rover to arrange for a
car.

Hot damn, now were talking. But I'm incredibly ugly and besides I can't
film myself, I'll need some outdoorsy macho looking dudes to star in this
movie.

And **** this 20 something crap, let's get some aging boomers for our film,
"Fly Fish Patagonia Before You Die ( hopefully )."

I can see shot after shot of rw then LaCourse rw then LaCourse rw then
LaCourse rw then LaCourse holding up progressively bigger and bigger fish
and, then, a final one of them tossing river rocks at each other.

And, obviously, we need several shots of wobbly and passed out geezers
surrounded by fancy, pricey, booze bottles.

Me, I can provide comic relief with shots of my wading, casting, and 4 inch
fish.

What do ya think BJ, can you get Cabela's to outfit us if we show lots of
glimpses of their label ?

Larry ,
You might try contacting these folks:
http://www.flyfishingmedia.com/servlet/StoreFront

They are a bunch of young guyz that travel the world fly fishing and making
video productions. They have a Ph.# on their website. I'll bet they would be
willin' to provide you with pertinent info, if you reach the right person.

After reading many of the replies and pondering my own experience a bit....I
have seldom found a place where I could not rent a vehicle AND driver for
less than standard car rental. In fact, much cheaper. Meals are part of the
deal which takes a load off the driver and his family...you get someone who
can serve as a guide of sorts....just kick the tires....

Well I see no conflicts with my current recording schedule, so I am
available.

Additionally, if you decide to go into video productions, all expenses are
tax deductible and you have the right to fold the operation after one
venture if you later decide it is unprofitable.
