I'm not offering definitive legal advice, but if I understand it
correctly, it's not illegal to download music (for personal use) if you
already own a "hard copy" and retain the hard copy.

Thanks, but I'd be willing to pay, in some cases .... However, I'm on the
world's slowest dial-up ... the single side Fred and I talked about in this
thread would take a minimum of 4 hours for me !!!

Just a suggestion - if he's willing to do it, upload load it to one of
the "Rapidshare"-type sites and you can DL it at night, or, have a
friend with high-speed DL it and burn to CD.

It appears that such use of your CD/album collection is a copyright/
fair use murky area, and that the RIAA would like it to be illegal:

And I'm sure Bill and Hil would like it to be illegal for anyone to vote
for anyone but them, but...

Seriously, though, one part of me would L-O-V-E to get such a letter
from RIAA and, of course, another part wouldn't want the hassle. I
guess I wouldn't ASK for one, but I'd have one hell of a good time with
it if I got one....FWIW, I don't "share" stuff in the Napster sense, but
I do have (some) electronic copies of "hard" copies (music and print) of
media that I have purchased and in Larry's case, if I had an electronic
copy, since he has a "hard" copy that he purchased, I'd send him a
personal-use electronic copy.

IAC, I think as long as there is not even a scintilla of evidence that
the person who made the electronic, personal-use copy either "shared" it
or didn't retain the "hard" copy, the RIAA is **** out of both luck and
sense in filing such a pleading.

A while ago, I got a USB turntable on a whim and have been recording old
albums

Today I found a couple ( Mingus and John Handy ) recorded at the Monterey
Jazz Festival at performances I saw, back in '64 and '65

It's amazing how sometimes a smell, taste, .... or some music, can bring
back floods of long forgotten memories ( mostly good :-)

If you mean John Handy Live at Monterey
with the 1st side

"If Only We knew"

It is one of my favorite all time pieces,
I have played it for my wife and daughter several times and even my
grandchildren .

It was reissued on CD and I must listen to it once a month
w Mike White in electric violin- Wow!

That's the one, Fred you can hear me applauding at the end G I was
in about the eighth or tenth row from the stage

my copy is pretty mucked with clicks and such, on that side especially, and
I would find it and download that track IF I had broad band ... I may just
have to find the CD, in this case, as it is a wonderful album and ...memory

See my prior post - since you own the album, I think it would be legal
for Fred to send you an electronic copy, provided you keep the album.
Properly compressed, it wouldn't be too bad, even on a dial-up.

Larry:

The CD Should be be eaily found
If not I can burn and send a copy let me know-
I also have it in vinyl -but my copy sounds like yours

Here''s another one- Charles Lloyd's Forest Flower Sunrise, Sunset w Keith
Jarrett on the piano.

I grew up pn the East Coast - NY
Instead of getting hung up on hard drugs - I was too cheap - I used to see
music and movies a LOT
I saw John Handy 3 or 4 times and John Coltrane 5 or 6 times - WOW!!
I liked Jazz far better than rock and I still do

Had a similar mind transport this morning. For whatever reason, a co-
worker & I were discussing the since-discontinued marketing of colored
live baby chicks at Easter. He remarked that a woman in our
accounting dept, Shelly, was Jewish, but her mother had bought her one
once. The original subject matter evaporated in my head, and I found
myself thinking Jewish...Shelly; and Shelly Berman popped into my
head, followed by a host of all of the great Jewish comics of my
youth, Berman, Shecky Greene, Milton Berle, Jackie Vernon, Marty
Allen, etc.

I suppose my youth was more comedy than musically oriented; and I
fondly remembered laughing at these guys on Sullivan and the other
variety shows of that time. Sitting in the family living room,
laughing in front of the old black and white. Great stuff.
