Jeff - saw ad for nice lodge on madison that offers small cabins with a
small bed and queen size for $80 per night, with a front porch facing the river, inside plumbing and a sink that drains. Might be as nice as that tauge me hall you selected for the last western clave! If the guy from New Zealand comes over you could offer to share the big bed with him. He tells really big fish stories and could sing some of his songs for us while sitting out on the porch in evenings. Perhaps you and Warren could take him bowling I said I wasn"t going west again but recieved my trip package of flies from Troutflies too late to use on Rock Creek so will probably send a couple of thousand dollars traveling out to the Madison so I won"t waste $12 dollars worth of flies. I'm glad to see you have your priorities straight Joe! It would be a gawd damn shame to waste those fine Harry Mason flies! Looks like I won't be in crisis mode next summer, so we can take a boat ride down the river again.... |

IJ replies---sounds good--if my legs hold out I know just where a big brown is stalking under the bank by an old car leaning beside the creek---hope I can talk bruiser out of more than one of those big foam flies with a paracute on top--thought last year we were going to have to take turns using one fly. Is your wife going t join you in the James Bond machine?? Have you named it yet? What was name and e-mail fo that guy we from Flordia we fished with at Morgenton? Probably accompaying my wife to South Georgia in Feb for a tennis tournment [ her team won all four matches in state tournment in Pinehurst last weekend] Imight just keep going and take him up on his fishing vacation offer. Hell he might not even be reading roff after driving all the way from Fla to N.C. clave and only getting to fish with only the two of us. [In the rain] |

The plan as of now is to spend the 2 weeks prior to the clave touristing/hiking with my wife around Yellowstone and then she'll fly back and I'll spend the next few weeks fishing out there. What was name and e-mail fo that guy we from Flordia we fished with at Morgenton? Dave Cassens. He said he stopped by the delayed harvest water on the way back and caught some nice fish. -- Charlie... |

Good Morning all,
As a paramedic Down Under, we used to have bets on how many hooks we'd get out of people in the first week after Barramundi Season Opening ..........quite a few. The technique certainly works well, no doubt about it. HOWEVER, there's also risks associated with it like lacerating tendon sheaths, neuovascular bundles and other essentials. Immagine having a forearm (casting arm) that doesn't have any control or sensation after taking the shortcut and severing the ulna nerve? Of course, if you can ascertain that the hook's in a fairly fatty area without underlying structures being at risk and there's no Doctors surgery available........... then there's the Tetanus etc. But then, i think about how many i've pulled out of myself..........can't stop fishing just because of 1 hook. Cheers, "Harry" "@(Peter A. Collin)rochester.rr.com" ""pcollin\"@(Peter A. Collin)rochester.rr.com" wrote in message ... Hello all, Just got back from a steelhead oddesey to Pennsylvania. Great fishing, good weather and a great time. However, during prime time last evening, I landed a fish with a treble hook busted off in its jaw. I yelled over to my buddy, while prying at the treble, "Boy, I did this fish a favor by catching it....OWWWWW!" The fish flopped and drove that treble right into my left index fingertip. as far as it could go. This was an old school hook, with thick wire and huge"catch and relese is for pussies" barbs. I poked at it for a while streamside, then head back to the parking lot. Felt bad that my buddy had to quit fishing during the witching hour for this. I thought i would go to town for razor blades to try and cut the hook out. If that didn't work, to the doctor I would have to go. This very nice gentleman in the parking lot saw my predicament and invited me over to his office, which was walking distance from the car. He gave me an exacto blade to try to cut the hook out. I diddled around and it didn't work. Finally he said "Well, I know what will work, but you have to trust me." He took a stout cord and looped it around the bend of the hook. He had me hold the eye of the hook so that it was held in the exact postition as it was when it enetered my finger. He would give the string a quick, hard jerk in the opposite direction. Now, I have seen this trick in books, but never saw it used. I wasn't too thrilled about it and was sweating profusely while bracing for the tug. My heart was pounding the way it does when the dentist comes at you with the yard long hypodermic. He yanked, and the think came out like a loose tooth. Nothing to it! I thanked the man over and over, said I felt like a fool getting so nervous about the procedure. The man was gracious and offered bandages and antiseptic creme. Just another random act of kindness. So I offer the technique here for all roffians. It could come in very handy, and possibly save a trip. Anybody who fishes for long enough is bound to have a similar thing happen to him. Pete Collin |

By now, I think I'd be debarbing, if I were you. :-) My worst self-hook was when I was a kid. Caught a bass with my last rusty hook and worm, and he had swallowed it all the way down. I couldn't reach deep enough into his mouth to loosen the hook, so I grabbed on tight (read: thumb inside his mouth as deep as I could get it) and YANKED the line. The hook slid right up my fingernail and imbedded itself top dead center right at the cuticle, all the way to the bend, with the tip buried somewhere in my knuckle. It was deep deep deep, and my eyes almost blew out of my head when I saw it. Tried to work it in deeper and debarb it, but it was buried to the bend and there was no pushing it farther. I couldn't even straighten my thumb cuz it was into the knuckle. I tried to slit my thumb open and remove it that way, but it would have involved opening myself to the bone, and I was too chicken. I was WAY deep in the boonies, and had no idea what I was gonna do: surgery seemed out of the question cuz I was a poor boy with only a few dollars, although my priorities sure are different nowadays. Finally, some neighbor came over and said "OK, here we go", and hooked my knife blade right at the bend of the hook, and said "Count to three." I went "One, Two.." and he yanked as hard as he could. Instead of coming out, the hook snapped off right at the bend! Fortunately, I could then use the knife tip to press the pointy end through my joint and remove it at the knuckle. In retrospect, if it hadn't broken, he almost certainly would have ripped out nerves and/or tendons. It didn't hurt until the next day, when the infection started. I cannot remember what ever happened to the fish. --riverman |

Peter,
Where can you get one of those boga grips? I need something but haven't found anything I like. Skeeter "@(Peter A. Collin)rochester.rr.com" ""pcollin\"@(Peter A. Collin)rochester.rr.com" wrote in message . .. Ouch. Sorry to hear about it, Peter. FWIW, I've always been concerned about my lack of control of the big guys when landing/removing the hook. My brother just gave me his boga grips, and I'll give em a try this winter. I think I'll be able to bring the fish in hotter, I won't ever need to beach them, and I'll have more control over the fish. Now, I just have to file off that weight scale so I can keep making up the weights as I go along. Scott Ah! There is always some product you can buy that will make life easier! I think I am reaching for the hook with foreceps only from now on. Should have done that all along - thier teeth have slashed up my hands many times. Anyway, I hope you get a brownie this fall that bottoms out your scale, Scott! |
