Smallmouth rod

a faster action 6wt. The 7wt is fine in the Sylvania Wilderness
Lakes where the fish are bigger but a 6wt is better I think if
you cast for hours at a time and the 6wt does just fine pulling
the smallies out of the brush and snags on the rivers.

My choice for smallmouth is a faster action 6wt.

I've used six weights but I like my 10' 7 wts. better. The longer
length is nice when you're sitting in a canoe and keeps any lead eyed
streamers that much farther from the back of my head. The seven weight
line handles deerhair divers and heavy flies better than the lighter
line weights. I broke my Redington 10/7 last summer and replaced it
with an Orvis tip flex Streamlight. Very satisfied with it.

OK, I will ammend my comment on 7 wt's being useless........IMHO I feel
that the 6 wt will almost do everthing for the smallmouth fly person,
but in my way of thinking (no crack here-just lipitor) a line weight
jump in increments of one usually just makes a marginal
difference.......from a 6 to a 8 will always conquer the problem, be it
wind, weight of fly or distance. Many swear by the 7 wt / Orvis had an
all arounder years back (the model) in that weight it covered all
situations but not all that well. All I know is what works for
me.......F/T

8.5 foot, 5 wt. Fenwick Royale. Works fine. I have used my old St Croix
8.5 foot 7 wt. girder, but it's definitely overkill.
