The reports are awesome. *Big fish smashing cicadas. *People getting tired of catching fish. *Time to head out. Frank Reid (In Worchester, MA right now) That's not what I saw. I did hit them pretty hard on the "Greg Hoover" cicada on Spring Creek Friday(6/13) and Saturday but not on Penns. The people I know that tried them on Penns got some action but not a lot. On Spring, the louder they (the cicadas) got the better the fish were at taking them. If you weren't fishing the banks then you were fishing. If you were fishing the banks, then you were catching. Nice sized fish too. Penns- Friday night at Ingleby was very good. Fished just off the parking lot (lot had 6 or 7 vehicles). Started about 7. Used size 16 BWO emrgers and got some action. Then about 9 size 12 spinners and did even better. Saturday evening we fished down from Stan's Bridge for about an hour- we got a few. I did hear that there were parts of Penns that had cicadas stacked inches deep but I did not see that. |

I would think that it would be a bad sign for everything. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cicada Although they are not harmful and at times beneficial to people Many people do eat them. I would prefer a brook trout w olive oil (or a little butter) tomato, onions and a lrttle Monteral Spice baked in a camplmfire with potatoes or even eggs Fred |

I'm no expert on this hatch but fom what Ive seen the areas with the
softest soil are the places to look for the big groups of Cicaids. The hard rock filled soil in the mouniain areas dont contain the numbers the farm land have but there are still good populations. Mornings are best around 5:30am to 10am and then when it gets hot around 2pm, I guess they dehydrate and loose energy late in the day and find their way to the water. Guys are fishing in pairs and one guy will shake a tree upstream and then the partner fishes the chum slick. I've had guys tell me they are fishing them in tandum so they pull on each other making them look alive. Other guys are fishing a dropper off the Cicada and its about a 50/50 ratio. The meat guys are using live Cicadas and a water bobber and some very big fish have been caught. The biggest I've been told about was 23 inches. The hatch should go on for another 2 weeks with all the overcast days we have had and are going to have. I've sold through 60 dz and poeple are still looking for them (Greg Hoovers Pattern). I splay the wings out to the side and crazy glue them so they stay out to the side. The lower creek near the farm land has been best - Weikert and downstream, but the C&R all the way to Coburn has them. Inglesby was especially good last Monday my only venture to this area this year. The BWO,Slate Drake and Cahill hatches have been fantastic too. Bruce |
