Two Weight

I didn't win the Ebay auction, so I'm still looking for a 2 weight, 7'6" to
8', medium action, and oh by the way, not horribly expensive (sorry, not up
to T&T status yet). I'll be fishing for goldens in California next month
and figure it would also be a nice rod for the brookies in the SNP. Were
talking 4-10" fish.
Also, line.... What is the best line (in your august and humble opinions)
for light line fishing. I know what works on my 4wt, and this is different
than what works on my 8wt. Is there an appreciable difference when using
very light tackle?
I don't have a lot of time to run all over the DC-Baltimore area trying
different rods. I would like to narrow down my search first, by using the
phone, so I can go and try out some of the recommended selections. This
will help me cross off stores that sell "non-recommended" equipment.

See if you can eBay an Orvis 7'9" 2 wt. or the 7'6" 1 wt. (it casts a
2 wt. just fine). Both are wonderful small stream rods.

Might I suggest a visit to this web site.
http://www.byrdultrafly.com/ultramain.htm There are more than a few
articles about ultralight rods, lines and reels including some very
interesting reviews. One review on UL rods under $200 retail. I have no
affiliation, etc... but did find the information there well thought out and
very well presented.

Hi Frank,

One problem I knottiest is that many 2 weight rods (especially low end ones)
actually end up being a 3 or even 4 weight when all is said and done.

I am constantly looking for small line size low end rods that will actually
load at 30 feet with the line they are rated for.

The new Cortland/Diamondback "Diamondglass" fiberglass rods are very light
and soft @ $275US. Maybe too soft for some? They are very smart looking too.

Well, with the Ebay thing being iffy (i.e. can't guarantee I'll get the rod
in time for my trip) and after perusing multiple reviews (googled the
different rods on ROFF) I've decided on the TFO Professional 8' 2wt. Yes
its a bit faster than what I would like, but the price is right and it will
give me practice with ultralite fly fishing.
So, in the a.m. I get to call Uncle Wally and purchase my own Lefty signed
rod.
Cool.

just to confuse the matter a little, Diamondback (All American Series) makes
a 6' 3 wt. that is a beautiful slow action rod. It is much softer than my
6'6" in the same weight and series. I almost bought one just for the SNP.
The 6' rod would turnover a delicate presentation of a dry with 6 feet of 7X
tippet out backed by a 9 ft. leader; just leader and tippet past the rod
tip. Walt might even be able to get one of those for you. The price is
nice and the rod light as a feather (Cree, #14). I like a line with a heavy
WF taper with the factory tip cut back a foot or so because you throw a lot
of casts with just a few inches or a few feet of line out. SA Mastery is
good for this.

Actually, I've already got a 6'3" 3wt that I like from Bass Pro (its the one
I used when we were on the SNP). Its nice for small waters. I'm looking
for a longer rod for stealthy presentations to small fish in bigger water.

Oh oh, change one. I am a firm believer in trying, as in fishing, a rod
before you buy it (if at all possible. Uncle Wally will still get my
custom, but a wonderful ROFFian (who shall remain nameless unless he
speaks up) has offered to loan me a rod for the trip to see if I like
fishing these lightweight rods and what may be right for me. This will
also give my wife a chance to suprise me on Xmas. Isn't ROFF cool?
