Odd thing is there are several different "Healing Waters". Not all fly
fishing.
http://www.healingwatersintl.org/ is one of my wifes favored charites. As
an aside. I make a lot less than Joe Biden, but contribute a lot more to
charity. How can a person have a taxable income of a quarter million dollars
and only give $1500 to charity. Should disqualify him from being anybody in
charge of the public's welfare.

My tax return doesn't show what I give. Why ? I don't itemize on the
1040. And I don't ask for receipts for used ****, or the food I grow
for the food bank, or the pro bono work and pricing my lady gives to
non-profits, or the "one call for all" giving we do, or the money we
give to the school support group, or the conservation voters auctions,
or a lot of other stuff that some folks gleefully chalk up whenever
they save themselves a dump trip. And that is essentially what Biden
said.

Do you deduct the cleaning bills for your underwear when your chopper comes
under fire? Yeah, neither does Biden...

In all seriousness, while Biden seems _generally_ to be a pretty good guy (as
professional pols go...), well, let's just say one might be better off relying
on what he does rather than what he says...including Joe hisownself...

HTH,

....and no, I have no idea if he was being completely honest with regard to his
giving, so I cannot say that he wasn't. But I will say that I suspect that
while he probably does give some "off the record," what he implied as far as
giving was probably not an accurate reflection of his largesse.

I would guess Biden itemizes. Seems as if the pols are very giving of other
peoples money. I know what I give, and the cash part is more than Biden's.
If you don't itemize, then it does not matter.

FWIW, ol' Darth is extremely generous with charities (and yes, I realize he has
take full legal advantage of the tax code in doing so, but the fact remains that
they have given millions over the years).

I know what I give, and the cash part is more than Biden's.
If you don't itemize, then it does not matter.

You'll need to clarify - I don't see how itemization changes what a person gives
(or doesn't). And even if he does itemize, he may well not keep track of
everything - hell, he may put an undocumented/unreceipted $100 bill into every
Salvation Army kettle, fireman's boot, cop's helmet, etc., etc. he sees or he
may toss a quarter into a single kettle once a year. I suspect he does give a
relatively small amount each year for which he gets no receipt and takes no
deduction. But I also suspect that he's not handing out serious amounts in
either cash or merchandise "off the record."

If you do not itemize there is no real reason to keep track of donations.
My wife is Catholic, so we get a statement from the church each year with
her donations and we have a friend in San Diego that we are a supporter of
her charity. I do not take off the mileage to Habitat building, or the
small stuff. Just the larger stuff. Since a large proportion of my dad's
family all died of cancer, maybe it is a self-preservation item to support
Cancer research and my former business partners wife is a breast cancer
survivor. I just get a little POed when some of these national figures
berate us for being cheap and then see their charity commitments are
negligible. Bill Clinton taking a charity donation for his old underwear
was criminal. Especially when he was valuing them at about what they sold
for new.

A couple of points - I've always felt that true charity is not something to
discuss, so I won't discuss specifics, but the tax aspect of it is simply a
legal thing. Whether someone keeps records and avails themselves of the tax
laws is one thing and IMO, totally unrelated to their actual giving spirit. IAC,
ss I understand the "debate," it is whether or not Biden gives (or how much).
If had been me, I'd have said, "It's none of anyone's business - I had to
release my returns, but I don't feel the slightest need to have to explain
that." YMMV. When he chose to comment further upon it, it made it fair game
for comments.

R
