New Orleans is a waste of time and money. If they are looking for
music, avoid the Memphis, Nashville, NO stuff and concentrate on the
Blues Trail. Go to Greenville MS, spend a night or three at some of
the black blues juke joints, then go up to Mountain View AR for the
best original country and bluegrass music. Both places have numerous
campgrounds with all the goodies for $20 or less. (Whitewater at Mt.
View is a place we often stay at). Resist the impulse to go to
Branson. It is for Nursing home buses.
For a view of "America" wander up US 83 from wherever it is
convenient, all the way to Manitoba, if you wish. However, for a look
at stuff like World Famous Saurkraut Days, World's Biggest Ball of
String, backyard welded dinosaurs, and REALLY great festival food,
turn east in northern Nebraska, through Sioux City IA, and trickle
across Iowa.
Then end up in Chicago for really great food, theatre, and the lake
before they fly home.

good luck.

Um, when's the last time you were in Greenville? There are a few true juke
joints left in the area, but Viking, the casinos, the Deltafest, etc., have
yuppified and tourista-ed it, IMO, considerably. Now, if you're talking the
whole general area, on both sides of the river, and down into LA, then, yeah,
that's something pretty cool to consider. The only thing I'd say is to really
experience it, you need at least 5-6 days...preferably in the spring or fall. I
would also take issue with NO being a waste of time and money. There are
probably as many good places to hear music and eat good food in NO as there are
in a 30-40-mile radius of Greenville...which is not to say the Delta is a bad
idea, just to say that NO isn't, either.

I will say this - in the Delta, you won't need to be nearly as cautious as NO as
far as just walking into any ol' place. I can't really think of any place up
there (but I'm sure there are some) where you'd truly be in real danger, but I
can think of at least a dozen right off in the general NO area, and at least a
couple that an unknown white boy and a couple from Germany_will_ have an issue -
how it resolves will be partly up to the white boy and his party, but partly up
to fate, and at least one that while I'd almost certainly be OK, I probably
still wouldn't go nowadays, even with friends of the, um, proper look - no point
in tempting fate THAT much...

And while Memphis and Nashville are pretty touristy, they have their good
points, too, but I'd rank them, in this situation, well below NO and the Delta
as possible destinations.

February, this year.

In town, there are only a few, but, as someone else said, there are
more out in the boonies. Ask around.

Yeah, but you step around those like you do mud puddles.

Which is a nice way for our German guests to remember the US.

We are in general agreement. My entire point was to avoid crowds,
congested highways, billboards, etc, and see the country, while
picking up some of the best music.

cheers

oz, who REALLY overloaded at Fat Babies, about 12 miles up Hwy 1 north
of Greenville -- $12.95 for all-you-can-eat of everything the
restaurant has, especially ribs and catfish.

FWIW, Clarksdale is the "Home of the Blues," where "the crossroads" are (where
State Highways 61 and 49 merge), etc., and while it, too, has become more, um,
tourist-y over the years, not as much as Greenville, IMO. To me, Greenville is
more a couples/bed-n-breakfast/The Alluvian kinda place, whereas Clarksdale is
more a tamales-n-Jack Black outta the bottle kind of place, but there's just not
a lot of "juke joint" kinda places _in_ either town (and really, there never
were _in the towns_ per se). If you think about it, with what a "juke joint"
really is, there would be no reason for a bunch of them to be in town. Now, if
you're talking about all of Coahoma County, that's a different matter.
