The plane went over, then the bang, then the wind from the vortices. Needless to say, really screwed up my cast, i.e. before the loop of line settled around me, I was hugging mud. Frank Reid bseg Remember the X Rock at Second Current? Years ago two F-15s flew over PIR at about 250 feet. Never saw them until they were on top of me and when I looked up, fell over (**** you, Richard!) into the current. Fortunately I had on neoprenes and a good wader belt. I simply swam to the island. I thought they were F-14 Tomcats, but the next time they flew over (the following week on Wednesday) I noticed that the wings were fixed. Now they are flying F-16s. I no longer look up without sitting down first. Soon after the war in Bosnia, a heli dropped off a "downed airman" at the Sand Banks across the lake from Lakewood. It was a hot sunny day, too hot to fish and everyone watched and wondered what was going on. About a half hour later, two A-10 Warthogs showed up and buzzed the area and stayed in a pattern above the lake. Soon another heli approached and "rescued" the "downed airman," while the A-10s circled a bit closer. Great show. Fortenberry should been there to see all four aircraft wasting fuel. FYF FYR d;o) Years ago, we were practicing with the race cars at Cotati Raceway. F102 comes over and paces a car down the back straightaway. Then hits the afterburner and goes straight up. Approved? Nope. Did we report it? No. Did we want a ride in the jet? You bet. And as to radial engines, in the last couple years I got to sit in the co pilot seat of a Radial Otter as to flew out of Kenai, AK to Wolverine Creek and wife gave me an hour in the front seat of an T-6. Got to fly loops and rolls. Fantastic. Not my flight but same thing, same company. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rEJcVSEGIM |

Because I weigh 220, they usually put me in the co-pilot's seat. In Alaska we flew in Beaver floats every day. Best thing about that is the earphones. The Alaskan planes always had earphones for all. Not so the Labrador Otters. As far as thrills: Having crashed twice while in the Navy (AF C-47 at Wright-Patterson, and a Navy C121 (Connie) in Japan, I no longer look for thrills. d;o) I did, however, take a 45 minute flight this past July over the Rangeley Lakes area in a Cesna 182 float plane and got some good pictures of the Rapid River. I took the two Russian girls working at Lakewood for the summer up with me (19 and 20 yo. Eat your heart out, wayno), and *they* were thrilled. Dave |

Dave Most of the Otters have been turbinized these days. C-47? I thought they never crashed. Just the $19. Gave more religion to others than any church. You prayed it would get off the ground and then prayed it made it back to earth safely. |

Dave The Connie is in my opinion, thee most beautiful aircraft built to this day. The last i saw was one the CIA apparently had on a contract out at LAX from Air America in the late 80s-early 90's. Two flites a week, one West, one South. Maybe over to Area 51? It is the only plane I would ever seriously consider having sex with. Dave Airplanes are Neat |

I can be sure of two things in this world: 1. You will never go back to Lakewood. 2. Fortenberry is an asshole and he too will never see the Rapid. Ooooops, that's three things. You should grab Jeffie, his wife Rachel, and your current SO and head up this way. Fishing this year has been very good. Heading back up in a couple of weeks. Jo and I will be there the last full week in September. Like I said, "Eat your heart out!" d;o) And the Russian girls, Ksenya and Irina, have returned to Russian, unchanged. |

I'll give you the same excuse I always give for the Penn's Clave. It makes absolutely no sense for me to drive right past some of the best fly fishing for trout in the lower 48 just to drive to another place that has some of the best fly fishing for trout in the lower 48. I've fished with a lot of roffians and had a great time doing it but my favorite fishing companion is a one year old, 60 pound blonde who can't hold her licker.
